love this idea...yeah you dont see LT when he is in prime being released in the middle of a race, signing with a team and winning them the title

Exactly...

Name 1 player who was an all-pro in their prime that joined a football team in midseason after being released...

Why can't you think of one...because it doesn't happen. Players may get traded in real life (occasionally) but their contracts don't expire, and teams don't release their stars....

well you dont even see stars in their prime getting traded either i completely agree this is good

Yeah but you see stars move occasionally via trade (Jared Allen, Herschell Walker, Randy Moss)...but you're right nearly always in the offseason....however you do see decent players traded (Chris Chambers) midseason...?!

So the idea is basically to remove the mid-season contract option, and only allow day 40 contracts? It would clean things up for sure, after players got resigned with the new default. You're removing an option that is potentially used by a lot of people, this way.

Along with this, shouldn't there be a cutoff (midseason point?) where the contract ends on day 40 of the NEXT season, instead of the current? Signing a day 40 contract on day 38 always seemed kinda stupid to me.

Yeah that's the basic idea. I'd suggest any signing after day 30 or so (regular season) be through the following season.

Although once all the current contracts that are 'midseason' expire and everyone is on day 40 that will become a minimal issue. Players can't be released after the trade deadline so the only free agents will be new players (heading to the D-leagues) or players that are on CPU owned teams.

Seems like a good idea to me, i'd make the cut off date for going to the next season end, day 32, end of the regular season

This idea should be implemented as soon as possible.

What about current mid-season contracts on CPU teams - should they be renegotiated to end on day 40 of the next season also? I think yes.

I would say for implementation all contracts are unchanged. Then starting this offseason the only options for contracts would be

--Season 8 day 40
--Season 9 day 40
--Season 10 day 40

Then around day 32 the 'season 8' option would be removed and Season 11 day 40 would be added. As for CPU contracts, just like others they'd have to run their course, but those would all be cleaned out within one season. And the other contracts would all clean out by the end of season 10.

i like it Don, but heres my question.

what about D league players, who get signed to a day 40 contract, yes i know its D league, and you can just get a new team, but what if you join a D league team, say day 37. will it go another season, or just end day 40? i dont know if Bort can code it to automatically set you for a 2 season contract after day X+ or so.

still love the idea, another +1

D-leagues would the same as the rest. Although when you are on a D-league you can always sign elsewhere...but as Bort mentioned it would make no sense for contracts to only run 7-10 days...so after a certain day of the season all contracts would roll through the next day 40

....another issue that hadn't occurred to me before today was dropped in a Private message. I asked and received the persons permission to post it below. Day 40 contracts would've helped him also....

There is nothing I can do, but I'd suggest you contact support. Not sure if they'll be able to get to you in time.

FYI---would you mind me removing your name and posting this PM as part of a suggestion I've been fighting for (all contracts should end on day 40)....???

My QBs contract (my own player) expired last night and he was on MY TEAM (that i am the owner of). It was a complete oversight and mistake, but now GLB won't let me resign him because the playoffs start today. Can anything be done so my player can resign with my team? It's the first round of the playoffs and we have no backup. PLEASE HELP!

Well, let's be honest. It sucks, but that was pretty poor team management on his part.

Anyhow, I fully support this idea.

I agree with the OP 100%.

Ironically, the reasons given are silly and useless, but there are actually relevant reasons not mentioned in the OP to do this change to contract offers.

clue: "ringers" will be released (making their contract end date meaningless) so that they can be er, ringed somewhere. Yes, signed onto a team with a level cap that they qualify for...the bastards!

I'd like to see this happen as well. I kinda think it's how it should've been in the first place but as long as it eventually gets put in(hopefully sooner rather than later) I'll be happy. This helps both the players & the teams. Teams get to choose from the whole pool of free agents during the off-season & players get the best shot to land a team they think they'll like. +1

In full support of this suggestion. There is no good reason to have players being dropped in the middle of the season because of a contract. It also helps the free agency market by having all the available players being displayed at the same time.
