This thread is similar to the first Field Graphic Upgrade thread except that this one has compiled all the most recent suggestions I could find about upgrading the field and gameplay graphically. Basically, the premise is to make the replays more appealing overall graphically. As always, GG helped with some of the player dots, pabst has been hard at work with greasemonkey, and Miley Cyrus is on lead vocals.

Here are the ideas that are suggested in this thread. I’ve separated them into sections so they are easier to find:
-Extended Sidelines and general field upgrades
-Ability to choose field surface (i.e. Grass, Turf, etc.)
-Ability to choose endzone art
-Ability to choose stadium roof/shadows
-Weather
-Animated Football
-Extras

Extended Sidelines and General Field Upgrades
One of the most annoying things when watching a replay is to see the QB wind up and throw it to a player dot that is…well, not there. That’s because this WR has run off the replay screen, but we can’t see him anymore even though the QB can. So I suggest extending the sidelines and viewing window a little bit so the play won’t go out the edge of the replay. Pabst has already written a GM script to test this, and it seems to work very well. The new field would look like this:
http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Plain.jpg

You may notice that there are a few changes to this field in addition to the extended sidelines. There are field goal posts, updated pylons, and 2-yardline hash marks as well.

Field Surface
It would be pretty cool to be able to choose the surface of your home stadium. The script is already there that determines which team is home and away, so the only thing that would need to be added is that the home team’s field would be shown in the replay. The field types would be found in a dropdown box in the “Stadium” tab of the Team’s page. While many have suggested that the different field types should provide bonuses and penalties to some attributes, while I’m open to that idea, it isn’t strictly necessary. The field types could be:
Grass – Plain: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Plain.jpg
Grass – Mowed: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Mowed.jpg
Turf – Mowed: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Turf-Mowed.jpg
Grassy Turf: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/GrassyTurf.jpg

Also, it would be pretty neat to see the field wear down going into the second half (only on grass fields):
Plain: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Plain-Worn.jpg
Mowed: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Mowed-Worn.jpg

You could even have the option of having a baseball diamond on the playing surface (like Oakland):
http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Grass-Plain-Baseball.jpg

Endzone Art
Similar to the field surface, another way for a person to customize their field could be to customize the endzone art found in the stadium. Eventually, you could have the team name written in team colors, or a logo. But to start, you could have basic patterns:
Checkerboard: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Endzone-Checkerboard.jpg
Diamonds: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Endzone-Diamonds.jpg
Stripes: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Endzone-Stripes.jpg
Catscratch: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Endzone-Catscratch.jpg

And if Bort were so inclined, he could even allow the upload of a custom 150x150 picture to the center of the field:
http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Novelty-Catscratch.jpg

Of course, you could have a few preset GLB logos to put on there also, which have already been collected from the GLB community by GG!

Roofs and Shadows
Many of you have seen this feature in pabst’s replay rewrite script already. Basically, this draws a shadow pattern over the field to emulate a sunny day, and actually looks very cool without slowing the sim down a wink . Thanks to pabst for the proof that this is not only easy, but very plausible.

An owner would choose a stadium shadow scheme in the same fashion as the surface and art. There could be the option to have a dome, retractable, or open stadium. The shadow scheme would only show on sunny games (more on weather below). I designed a few preset shadow patterns based on NFL fields so people can see what this looks like:
Basic Retractable (not NFL-based): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-Roof1.jpg
Custom Retractable (Dallas): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-Roof-Rodeo.jpg
Open 1 (San Diego): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-SuperCharged.jpg
Open 2 (Denver): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-MileHigh.jpg
Open 3 (Kansas City): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-BowAndArrowhead.jpg
Open 4 (Cleveland): http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Shadow-DawgHouse.jpg

Weather
This is something that people have been talking about for seasons now, and might not be too tough to implement. I’m not suggesting that people choose climate patterns and have it based on time of season, or anything like that. In fact I would suggest that to start, weather would be completely random. Any given game has a 40% chance to be sunny, 30% chance to be cloudy, 20% chance for rain, and 10% chance for snow (at least to start, until more advanced features are added). A person could check the weather for the game prior to it by going to the matchup screen. Top center, there could just be a little box to tell the expected weather of the game, like these:
Clear: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Box-Clear.gif
Cloudy: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Box-Cloudy.gif
Rain: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Box-Rain.gif
Snow: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Box-Snow.gif

Domes and retractables wouldn’t have weather. Snow and rain would be treated as “Cloudy” for shadow purposes. Temperatures could just be a random number depending on the weather type (i.e. 12-35 for snow, 36-55 for rain, 56-70 for cloudy, 71-95 for clear). The playing surface would actually change as well:
Rainy: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Rainy.jpg
Snowy: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Weather-Snow.jpg

Like field surfaces, you could have weather affect attributes of players if you wanted, but it isn’t totally necessary. Unfortunately, having an animated weather effect in the replay hogs up some serious memory slowing the replay to a halt (pabst and I tried this), so that will have to wait.

Animated Football
Something that actually might improve the clarity of what is going on in the replay is an animated ball. When a QB throws a pass, the ball could spin out of his hand until it is touched by another player. When a kicker boots a touchback, the ball could fly end over end out the back of the endzone or until it hits the ground/returner. Nothing major, but it would be cool nonetheless! The footballs are already made (thanks to GG for these, he made them ):
Passing: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/passing-ball.gif
Kicking: http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/kicking-ball.gif

Extras
Chain Gang: Very simple, and yet many people have suggested it. And with the sidelines extended, why not have the chain gang? Small file size, just needs to be drawn on the line of scrimmage and first down marker. You’d even have the guy showing which down it is:
http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Example-ChainGang.jpg

Referees: While a lot less plausible, referees could add another realism factor to the replays. You could just have static dots out there, but it would be even cooler if they moved around and followed the play, or even if they…threw flags on penalties?
http://i473.photobucket.com/albums/rr98/saintedix/GLB/Example-Referee.gif

Not Happening Anytime Soon: The whole field, event staff, cheerleaders, press, photographers, team sidelines, waterboys, coaches, and even some bleachers with assorted fans. Too bad the file size of including all of these things would crash the GLB servers…sorry, but cheerleaders will have to wait for another time:

So that’s it. Comments, suggestions, ideas? Pimp the GLB replay!

Note: Some of the turf and roof ideas may coincide nicely with Moebius_34’s Stadium Upgrade suggestion found in the Epic Suggestions forum:

This is the best idea I've seen on this site. The referees and chain gang along with the animated ball are great ideas. The fields look nice too.

Working on it. I can get the field to display properly except that it cuts off the bottom endzone. Also, it doesn't work with pabst's replay script yet, which is the ultimate goal.
