No shame at Southside in losing to the Crimewave. Thanks to all for the competition over the past few seasons but we're resetting next season.

Not directly quoting that, but wanted to reply to the comment about the Rum Runners management. Flattered, but they do have a pretty sucky AI guy that can ruin it for them (myself, lol). Thanks for the kind words though, you're a class act manofplay

Thanks robbie, its times like these that I am happy that my team outlevels many of our competition including your team. Without the six plus level difference, I am sure we aren't in this position.

Thanks Meat, you always downplay your skills all the way to the trophy room. :-)

Ok, so first round generally isn't rocket science, though a little luck helps. I will take the perfect record though and use that to explain why I am so good at this. Funny how I am sure my wife will put my ego back in place before I even finish typing this. :-)

The good thing is that there are less teams to try and talk about and scout. The bad thing is that I think pretty much any one of these teams could take down my own team. :-(

1 High Seas Marauders
5 Austin Longhorns
Hard to pick against my own team, so going to throw that out there at the start. I really wasn't sure which team I wanted to win in round one. The Potables beat us and the Longhorns probably should have. Either way, I knew I was going to struggle to beat either team that got through.

In season meeting Marauders escape with a 27-26 nailbiter. A 101yd kickoff return late in the fourth followed by a last minute field goal helped the desperation win for the good guys :-)

Looking back at the game, still hard to believe how my Marauders won. The Longhorns dominated the total yards, rush yards, had one less interception and had a thirteen minute time of possession advantage. Guess I forgot to tell y'all that Bort was on my payroll.

The game was likely lost for the Longhorns in their lower completion percentage and fewer yards per reception. As is often the case the last few seasons, it seems that the Longhorns used a short pass to the halfback and TE to move their offense against my Marauders. Their HB Jeroam Bettus I was nearly unstobbable for my defense with a 9.6yard average.

My Marauders went pass heavy to the WR and split the HB carries between two backs with Mickies Bigmouth having good success at 10 yards per carry (a better GM would have run him a ton more).

Prediction:
It looks to be the Marauders number one ranked defense vs. the Longhorns number one ranked offense.
This will again be a really close game.
Threats: The Longhorns will run, run and run some more with their division and league MVP Jeroam Bettus I. Jeroam rushed for more than a thousand yards more than the second place HB. On the flip side, the Longhorns completed less passes than anyone else in the division.
The Marauders use a staunch defense that doesn't give up many points with a fairly balanced team. We don't seem to do any one thing extremely well according to the stats, but do many things pretty well.
Marauders win in overtime with another kick return for a touchdown.

2 French Toast Mafia
3 Brethren Krewe Rum Runners

In season meeting, the Mafia went running all over the Krewe 34-10
The first quarter of the game was even but the Mafia slowly started to pull away in the second quarter. Looking at the game, there doesn't seem to be one event that turned it towards the Mafia, just a constant pressure until they broke a big play. The Krewe did ok, but had few big plays to keep up with the Mafia.

It appears as though the Krewe went with the strategy of slowing the game down and going with a heavy run focus. It worked to the tune of 4.7 yards a rush, unfortunately the Mafia were rushing at over six yards a rush. The Krewe generally didn't try many passes and the ones they tried weren't overly successful. On the flip side, the Mafia passed at a greater than 50 percent clip at around 5yards per reception.

French toast had a leading receiver as TE with the second leading receiver as a FB. WR's didn't get overly used in this matchup. When the Krewe did throw, they moved the ball around as well with the leading receivers being the WR and TE position.

Predictions:
This one ranks the Mafias number two offense vs. the Krewes number two ranked defense. To show how even this one might be, it also ranks the Mafias number five ranked defense against the Krewes number five ranked offense. French Toast Mafia sports the number one ranked QB in the division (HERO GOAT MAGIC TOFU BEAN SPOUT ARM ), so you know they will come out passing. HERO Goat was in the running for MVP, but got beaten out by a robot of a running back.
The Krewe counters with Matt Davis who has a ridiculous 79 to 7 TD vs. Int number. Just to show the defense some love as well, Caleb James has been a beast on defense with just fewer than one pick a game.

I really want to pick the Krewe as they have been winning lots of big games all season. However, as well as the Mafia is playing right now, I can't pick against them and think they will win by at least a touchdown.

Will try and get to the other division later tonight or tomorrow.

1 Sin City Silent Assassins
4 Her Majesty's Dragons
In season meeting: This looks to have been a really good game. At halftime it was a one point game. It took til the second half when the Assassins went on a field goal barrage to separate themselves.

Assassins didn't even pretend to present a running game against the Dragons and its a good thing they didn't as the Dragons had them going backwards on the few plays they tried. The Dragons went forward with a balanced attack and did everything fairly well. Well, other than the final score. They won the time of possession, ran the ball much better than the Assassins and were fairly equivalent in their passing game stats. They won at the line of scrimmage and were equivalent on kick and punt returns. So how the Assassins pulled this one out again, I am not sure. The Assassins do own a substantial leveling over the Dragons, however, that didn't appear to apparent in their first game.

In the passing game it seems as though the Assassins targeted the TE and WR before going anywhere else. A bit uncharacteristic for alot of peoples game plans nowadays, they didn't set their passing targets to near exclusively short passes as they were tossing it all around the field. It appears as though the Dragons tried to counter the passing attack by playing a 3-4 as their base defense.

In the passing game for the Dragons, the WR were the first targets followed by the TE and than the FB. It looks like they ignored the HB in the passing game (poor guys). It appears as though the Assassins played a base 4-3 with some variation to allow for a 3-4 on a low percentage of plays. Seems a contrast of defensive styles between the two teams.

Predictions: Sin City was definitely dominant during the season as they were ranked number one in offense and defense in their division. The Dragons were third on offense and second on defense (how the heck did they fall to fourth place then?).

Threats:
The Assassins have seven levels on the Dragons and possess the far and away number one QB in the division in John "Paddy" Driscoll as well as the number one and two WR's in the division SC SA WR and SC SA FB.

The Dragons sport a 2000 yard rusher in Micheal Fournier, a plethora of talented receivers and a QB that has thrown for 3500 yards not to mention the little threat of a dual threat QB.

The winner of this game can make a case to the powers that be to throw them into pro's next season (if thats what they want). Lots of Pro teams dropping down or leaving which should make for a good number of openings for teams in the finals and possibly even one or two from semi final games.

Similar to the last one, this one will be close for awhile. However, as opposed to the last time these two played, I think the Dragons will win the second half and fire off into the next round.

2 Baltimore
3 Offtopica
In season meeting: Crimewave sneaks out the backdoor with a 20-19 win using a late field goal to win it.
To get there, the Crimewave looked to pound the ball inside with HB and FB runs while targeting the WR first and then followed it up with the TE, HB and finally the FB. They weren't afraid to pass the ball all over the field, unfortunately for them, the Forumites shutdown the long passing game, which greatly affected the pass percentage. The Crimewave did well passing short and midlevel and I wouldn't be surprised if they pursue that avenue a bit more this next game.
The Forumites came out with an extremely balanced offense and in reality, their end game plan is almost a match for what Crimewave ran. Offtopica ran the ball with slightly better success than Crimewave, and also favored the WR more than the other positions in the passing game.

These two teams seem very evenly matched and have similar philosophies. The Forumites have a few levels on the Crimewave, but the Crimewave have some saavy verterans on the team that may be enough to make up for the level difference. It did in the first game and wouldn't be surprised to see it again.

The Crimewave sport the number two offense and number four defense. Their passing game has the second highest yards per attempt and yards per completion, so obviously you have to defend the whole field when playing them. Surprisingly, as much as they throw it, they are very good at protecting both the quarterback and the ball as they don't get sacked often and don't throw pics. The Crimewave has the second leading rushing team and leads the league in rushing touchdowns.

The Forumites team is deceiving. For as good as they seem to be, their offense is ranked seventh in the division and their defense is ranked fourth. This is definitely one of the tougher teams to scout. They do a few things well, but nothing exceptional. They are good, but mostly middle of the road at everything they do. They don't make mistakes and seem to wait for their opponent to make mistakes.

Prediction: While I am sure this will turn into a battle as these teams seem so evenly matched and had quite the battle the first time around. I expect to see to conservative game plans with each team waiting for the other to make the first mistake. I lean toward the Crimewave due to the weapons they have and their leadership.

So minus the ridiculous delay in getting this finished (sorry guys, real life gets in the way sometimes :-( ), my prediction to advance:

High Seas Marauders
French Toast Mafia

Her Majestys Dragons (wow, did I really pick it that way last night. Need to check the alcohol content in that cold medicine)
Baltimore Crimewave

Good luck all. Well except for the Austin Longhorns. I hope you have a good game, but fall short to my boys so we can move on :-)

Definitely a GG, and I hate to be the team to give you a loss before the reset. It won't be the same level of competition without you guys being here.

Good read, Manofplay, but I think you have the #1 team results backwards..

The Assassins also have the #2 and #3 TE's and if the Dragons have a weakness on D, it's their Pass Defense. Right where the Assassins excel.

Well, three out of four ain't bad. Should have just stuck with the chalk and I could have been perfect. There were some very good games this last week and some scores that didn't represent the level of competitiveness. However, no we get down to the serious stuff. The remaining four teams are all likely heading to the pro's next season. So no more kids play from here on out.

High Seas Marauders take down the Austin Longhorns 37-10
High Seas did something that nobody had been able to do all season. Shut down the Longhorn running game. I am not quite sure what the Longhorns did differently, but it obviously didn't work as their all world running back Jeroam Bettus I only got four carries for 10.5 yards compared to the first game where he rushed 23 times for 220 yards.

The Longhorns saw that in the first game they had success running to the right, so apparently geared up and went 100 percent right this last game. Unfortunately it appears as though the Marauders were ready for it and while they couldn't shut the Longhorns down, they seriously limited their big play ability and slowed drives to a cattle crawl.

The result of this game seems a fluke as I don't believe it reflects the closeness of the two teams. In this game, the Marauders won pretty much every phase including special teams.

French Toast Mafia escapes with a 13-10 win in their game against the Brethren Krewe Rum Runners

The game was very close and took big plays for each team to be able to find the end zone. An 82 yard touchdown run by Frank Sangre of the Crewe in which he broke tackles, showed his moves and wouldn't be denied. Vs. a 76 yard screen pass from HERO GOAT MAGIC TOFU BEAN SPOUT ARM to Shake N Fake in which he just pretty much outran everybody. Otherwise, there was a lot of back and forth with a total of 22 punts between the two teams. Both teams lost one pic and both teams lost one fumble. French Toast controlled the ball for ten more minutes than the Crewe which is likely what turned the game.

Oddly enough, after the first two minutes of the game, the Krewe never saw the ball on the opponents side of the field. While the Mafia used a big play to win the game, I think the MVP might have to go to French Toasts punter - Punt Corner who kept the Crewe pinned against their endzone all game long. 10 punts, 2 inside the five, 4 inside the 10 and 2 more inside the 20. Tough to make something happen over that long of a field.

High Seas Marauders vs. French Toast Mafia
High Seas upended the Mafia's try for a perfect season with a 34 - 13 win. High Seas doubled up the Mafia in yardage gained for the game. Both teams were able to rush the ball effectively, but it was the big play in the passing game which game the Marauders the win.

Early on, the game was close. The Marauders scored first, but the Mafia left the first quarter feeling good with a 10-7 lead. The Marauders turned it up in the second quarter and walked into the locker room at half with a 27-13 lead. Neither team could get much going for points in the second half with the exception of the Marauders getting a meaningless touchdown in the final two minutes of the game.

Prediction: Both teams come out with balanced offenses, however once again the Marauders win the second half and walk away with a win by a field goal.

Sin City Silent Assassings vs. Her Majesty's Dragons

Well, I ignored common sense and went with my gut and Sin City decided to kick me and the Dragons in it. Sin City Silent Assassins destroys Her Majesty's Dragons in a game (46-3) that I thought would be close.

Sin City showed they are no joke in this one and I learned my lesson about doubting them. They did have the advantage of several levels on the Dragon's but the way they have played all season and into this game, they could have been outleveled themselves and still walked out with the win. John "Paddy" Driscoll appears to be the next coming of Dan Fouts or at least Drew Brees. 89 attemps, 46 completions, only 1 pic compared with 4 tds. Who needs a running game when you can throw like that. And similar to the first game, Sin City didn't even make an effort to go with the running game, but went with what got them here.

Her Majesty's Dragons just couldn't get any sustained drives until the fourth quarter, and by than it was too late. The Dragons lost the time of possession battle by over ten minutes and their consistent attack was slowed to a total of 231 yards. Next season this may be a different game as they get the additional levels to compete, but this game they seemed to hit the hot team at the wrong time.

Baltimore Crimewave vs. Offtopica Forumites.

This game played out as predicted. Very closely matched teams. Baltimore sneaks away without getting caught and talks up the forumites to the total of 13-6.

Time of possession, yardage, number of rushes, yards per rush, and even yards per pass all fairly even between these two teams. It definitely turned into a game where one team waited on the other to make the first mistake. Baltimore had been convincingly winning the turnover battle 2-0 until the two minute mark of the game. An interception at the two minute mark on their own side of the field gave the Forumites the mistake they needed to tie up the game. While most of the season the Forumites were able to come up with the big play when they needed it, the Forumites drove to the Crimewave 18, but could get no closer and turned it over on downs.

Sin City vs. Baltimore

This game in season was the only game that Sin City really got challenged. Ultimately they prevailed 32-21.

Baltimore used a bend but don't break defense in which they allowed Sin City to move the ball quite a bit, but allowed them with a ton of field goals, but not many touchdowns. Baltimore made the most of their scoring drives and went for TD's when given the chance. While they also moved the ball very well against the Assassins, Sin City's prolific offense was just too much for them to keep up with.

For Baltimore to have a chance this game, they must figure out how to slow or turnover the all world passing game for Sin City. So far, nobody has been able to do it. While I like Baltimore alot and think that as they age, they will be competing for a pro trophy, this appears to be the season of the Assassin and I like them to move on.
