Original Post 3/14/09:
I always thought this was one of the stranger things in GLB. I think it would be very easy to code into the game and its such a huge part of the NFL. Horrible teams often beat undefeated teams (Browns beat Giants on MNF last year), only b/c it was a home game and they were so pumped up.
Now I know for the most part players don't get faster and stronger when they play at home, but they probably get boosts to other stats. I suggest home teams get a boost in Confidence (+5%??), a boost in morale at the beginning of every quarter, and a stamina boost to start the 4th quarter. Maybe even a small boost to the mental attributes and football skills (Catching, Vision, Tackling etc...) That doesn't seem like it would be too hard as long as there weren't a million IF's and Then's exceptions and this always happened, to keep it simple.
People will always complain here when anything has the POSSIBILITY of being unfair (ie: a team luckily getting all their tough games at home)...but its a schedule and even in the NFL, it can be 100 fold harder for some teams than others.
What do you guys think?
EDIT: This may have been posted a million times, but it wasn't in the first 5 pages of suggestions, and it wasn't in Epics
SECOND EDIT 3/16/09:
So far, I think more people are for HFA than against it. I think the consensus is to stick with only have bonuses to confidence, morale (demoralizing factor), and maybe stamina, whereas boosting primary attributes to an entire team can result in a superior unfair advantage.
It has been brought up to either do it by a +1 for each complete section sold out or as a bonus, but either way based on stadium size and attendance
It has been brought up that the bonus should disappear if home team goes down by enough points and/or the opposing team can get a penalty (demoralizing factor) if they go down by enough points or give up big plays. High Confidence/morale for your player can help resist these hits.
Playoff games and/or championship games would have to be on neutral turf for fairness.
PROS: Much more lifelike, gives lesser teams a chance to win at home (the upset factor), gives additional motives to build up stadium past just getting money. Makes playing at home mean something past just concession sales. Adds some importance to player confidence.
CONS: Scheduling issues can give teams an unfair advantage/disadvantage that might turn out to be important. VA Hometown Hero kind of solves the HFA issue (but it requires investing and is only on a player by player basis). Takes some importance out of player build matchups.
I'll add more as we get some more details
