You knew SF was in trouble when Mahomes threw his interception in the 3rd and SF had the ball starting at midfield and got nothing on the drive. That was a chance to put them away and they wasted it.

We'll see what the Niner's coach learned that Andy Reid already knows. Can't let yourself get tight in a do-or-die game. It's easy to play loose if you're slightly behind... but it's hard to keep that foot on the throttle when you're ahead. While I wasn't his biggest fan, Belichick knew this and was good about never letting up from coin flip to final whistle. I saw several 'tightness' plays by the Niners... things they did "not to lose" rather than doing things that "go for it" and the win. Even that which I mentioned... 4th down in OT and a TD wins it. WINS it. They went "safe" and it bit them in the ass. You can be TOO gunslinger mentality but... you can get tight, as well, if you're not careful.

Actually that rule changed this season. Not sure if it's all playoff games or just the Super Bowl. Each team was going to get the ball at least once regardless, even if the initial possession results in a TD. Only exception is pick-six or a scoop and score.

Wow. Even I didn't know that. What I remember of the way it was was each team got 1 possession. If the 1st team kicked a FG the other team got a shot to tie or win (one possession). If they didn't score then the next team to score won... so if the team with the next possession kicked a FG they won... or scored a TD. But if the team with the 1st possession scored a TD... I might be wrong but my fuzzy brain thought it was 'game over'. So now it's still team with next possession gets, at least, a shot at tying the score? Cool. I like that better. I can remember a few games where the coin flipped... the foot kicked... and the returner returned... for a TD. Boom. Game over. Last game I remember that happening was, I think Chicago and Detroit? I think it was Chicago's returner too.

You are dead on Theo; The OT rule as you mentioned is still in play for the regular season. Not sure if the new rule applies to the playoffs in general or just the Super Bowl. Hope it is the playoffs as a whole, as it would seem that each team has earned the right to that.

Perhaps someone else knows the extent of the rule...?

I hope they implement that rule for the regular season as well. Just as you mentioned, both teams deserve that opportunity

I think both teams should start at the 50, or some variant of the college football overtime rules.

The rule was both teams get the ball at least one time. If both teams scored on each of their possession, and it was still tied then it would go to whoever scored next wins.
San Fran too the ball first because if they both scored they would get it the 3rd time and if they scored then they would win.

As we know that didn't happen as KC scored a td on their possession to win the game.
