Per the announcement, we will have 4 season built dots, and (subject to change) 5 season plateau dots. This thread is to discuss the "subject to change" portion, ie Plateau length.
I do want to note its somewhat important we understand plateau length in the next season or two, since anyone making farm teams needs to know "WHEN" they need to be made.
Pro's of longer Plateau
1. Same team can stick together and climb/battle through plateau leagues more. As-is if it takes 2-3 seasons to climb to the top league in plateau, that only leaves 2-3 seasons to battle in the top league before your dots hit decline. One unlucky promotion game and you're in trouble wasting the career of an entire team of dots. This means the shorter plateau is, the more it favors the advantage of farm team networks and the more it hurts independent cradle to the grave teams.
2. The longer plateau is, presumably the more plateau dots there will be, so the more full/competitive leagues and plateau players that will exist.
3. Longer plateau is better for the players, since it decreases the per-season cost of indivisual dots. By my calculation, if we go from the old 12 season to a new 9 season system, even with borts new discounts, we are increasing the net cost of a 200 flex dot from 189 flex/ssn to 228 flex/ssn, which doesn't feel great: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11BfLfPX5TuzxWLs7bzn5t_b9ZUCja64sAjeqLIHdDrg/edit?usp=sharing
4. Longer plateau helps Bort since more (non-refunded) flex will be tied up in plateau dots, meaning when players go to create more dots for fun, they will need to buy additional flex.
5. It also allows this game to have more activity/life in top leagues by empowering independent owners or cradle-to-the-grave teams. This is an important aspect when the pre-snap GLB became completely dominated by networks in top leagues since those were the only ones organized enough to keep a steady stream of dots to support a plateau team.
6. The longer plateau is, the mort likely it is for free agent dots to actually exist and find new teams in the off-season (as opposed to being 97% earmarked for 3-4 networks).
=======================
So if longer Plateau is better, how long is the perfect amount of time without stifling new dots?
Personally, I think with the way the new pricing and dot build timing is structured, a 7 season plateau makes the most sense since it brings net dot cost per season closely inline with old GLB (189 flex/ssn in old GLB, 4build/7plateau would be 186 flex/season) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/11BfLfPX5TuzxWLs7bzn5t_b9ZUCja64sAjeqLIHdDrg/edit?usp=sharing
I do still think that a 6 season or 8 season plateau is superior to a 5 season plateau for all the reasons mentioned, but 7 would be my suggestion to the collective community.
