The roots of the Tampa 2 system actually are in the Steel Curtain days of Pittsburgh football. Tony Dungy has been quoted to say “My philosophy is really out of the 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers playbook,” said Dungy during media interviews while at Super Bowl XLI. “That is why I have to laugh when I hear 'Tampa 2'. Chuck Noll and Bud Carson — that is where it came from, I changed very little.”[1]

But back to the OP.

Say if your Defensive backs are all around 9-11 level range. Vision around 25-35. Speed 30-45. Is that sufficient to run an effective zone?

These guys play zone and it works REALLY well for them. Trust me. I paid for it. Look at the INTs.

Does anyone else have links to teams successfully running a zone defense?

When you are scouting a team what are the signs that a play is zone?

Defenders cover an area, not a player.

DEs also seem to drop into coverage a nice amount

Go watch ANY of the Tampa Bay Greyhounds games. They picked us off 5 times and we have some of the best WRs in the league and our QB has an excellent build. I hate playing them

You obviously are not a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. I HATE Cover 2 (or at least the version we've been trying to run the past two seasons).

That wasn't them. That was your QB. I just watched the game where the QB got picked off 5 times, and every time, he had a better, more open option than the target he threw to. Diagnosis: Your QB has a crappy vision rating.

When a CB drops back and sits there and then when two Receivers enter his zone and he does nothing because he doesn't know who to cover and then promptly gets burned for a TD.

Or, he could be playing with his Favorite Targets and trying to force teh ball too much?

Or he could have a 45 vision and they do it to almost every team they play. Thanks for the wrong assessment Kayoh

My opinion is that zone sucks and only a sucker would use it.

You can't control it. it triple covers the tight end while WRs run doan the sidelines uncovered, it sends DEs out to cover WRs and RBs and when used in conjunction with the blitz all hell breaks loose because you cannot control any of it.

Don't get me wrong, I WANT to play zone and am a big fan of it in real football, but in my opinion only a moron of a DC would use it in this game right now.
