Sorry if this has already been asked before, but since there's no search function, I'm forced to start a new thread.

I heard the Zone kind of doesn't work unless you have really good CBs.

Exactly what attributes do you need to run an effective zone system? What are the advantages of zone over man to man anyways?

zone is pretty much a bend not break defense, and ive found that its most effective when an over matched secondary is trying to compensate. If you have good enough corners, they should be able to play man and cover close. But to answer your question, u need a lot of vision and agility to run zone, as well as closing speed.

Zone depending on you line backers can be much better for stopping the run too

If you have quick CB and Line backers zone can be very good, the players tactics should also be set right.

like for tackling unless the play is very very good tackler he should be set to wrap up because a missed tackle can go for a TD easily

i would assume there are teams that favor the zone defense even when the CBs matchup well?

I would think it depended on if you blitzed a lot during the game also

These guys play zone and it works REALLY well for them. Trust me. I paid for it. Look at the INTs.

well they are level 20 CBs. The CBs I deal with are like levels 10-14. They might be just too low to run a zone.

Zone needs a lot of speed and HIGH vision to work well, but if you can get it right, it will shut down a lot of teams.

Zone is made for one person to be able to make a mistake and someone else can cover him, where as man to man, if you're not double-teaming him, and you get beat - he's an open receiver.


So you're going to need the speed and vision for both.

Its kind of like a catch-22 thing.

If I get a lot of speed and agility and vision, then my CBs will be really good and they would be more than capable of doing man to man.

You obviously are not a fan of the Minnesota Vikings. I HATE Cover 2 (or at least the version we've been trying to run the past two seasons).
