This is how an FS should be getting his tackling stats, as the final line of defense, a last resort...

Personally I prefer my FS getting his tackles like this :

Nice one

Not all Free Safety tackles have to be the last line of defense

I set focus to pass, because by the time you're done being faked out by a run, he is still in front of you and maybe at the level of the LB's. But getting burned by play action for focusing on a run or being balanced can totally ruin a defensive stand
Plus, run stopping is for the d-line and linebackers. Our job is to knock down, intercept, or knock out receivers. And clean up missed tackles.

Well usually the SS plays balanced because you need at least 1 person in the secondary knowing where the HB is, but on my team they want me on balanced because I'm the best player back there works pretty well actually

IMO, the FS and SS combo, in their 'best' incarnations, should scare the opposing team's offense.

The FS should make WRs scared to run deep routes. Not because they won't catch it, or they can't get open, but because the hit the FS will put on them is that painful/big.
The SS should make the HB and TE nervous about getting too far outside of the flats, for the same reason.

I find those two positions to be 'sentinels' in a way. They may not do much, but the things they do are of epic proportions.

yea the FS should be able to shut the deep side of thier field it's also why they are on the weaker corners side, then the SS should shut down the middle of the field and under neath the stronger CB which is why they play up near the box

yea generally what happens is if our front 7 play well then I don't have to make hits but if they don't my guy flys all over the field and has like 8 tackles... 6 from the run and 2 from pass... I can see what you're saying about how he's not getting in on plays he should have but he flys at times and when my team does good he disapears ... I guess I'll just up speed and vision more then they already are *sigh* (2 highest attributes....) I'll tinker around and see if I can't find the source of this mystery...

I like to play it close with man coverage, when I stand a few yards back I notice that I give up so many passing plays. But my ultimate goal is to be balanced w/ more hard hitting tendencies. So standing a few yards back as a hard hitter could be good as it will give you a few yards to build up some steam and lay a big hit on a receiver, plus it could lure them to pass there and you could create more fumbles on their WRs who probably don't have very high strength/carrying.
