as it stands now, a lot of times the team who hosts the league championship game does so based on points scored, not won-loss record, as many teams go into the league championship game with undefeated records or other records that are exactly the same. the two best teams in the league, one from each conference, should not have something as significant as home field in the title game be decided by a few extra points scored against an entirely different set of opponents than each other, wouldnt you think?

therefore i propose this solution:

a neutral site for the championship game!

think about it, how fair would that be? two teams climb to the top of the mountain, and get to split a large pot of ticket sales that is guaranteed to sell out for the highest price possible (after all, im sure fans everywhere would flock to see the title game even if their teams arent in it!). there could be a guaranteed payout for the teams, and they both get to share in the pot whereas before a team could go 16-0 and make only 500k-1mil, while the other team went 16-0 and made 3-6 mil.

this could be adjusted based on league, a 13 (16 by the championship) capped league could have a full 100 bowl sell out at 5x, to be split amongst the two teams. i personally would like to see it be something like 5x, not the normal 3x, to be split amongst the teams, after all, on all levels of football, from the superbowl, to bcs bowl games, to high school state championships, these games sell out and do so at very high prices. the 5x also breaks down so that each team gets roughly what it would if it had hosted the game, maybe a little less. for 21 capped leagues (28 by championship) could have a full 200 bowl sell out at 5x, to be split. and finally all uncapped leagues would have the entire stadium (300 levels as well) sell out at 5x. an additional bonus could be done for the pros if needed, but not necessary. concessions would be split as well.

this isnt really a rich get richer, because in most cases the payout the teams get from this would already be going to one of the teams, even more so. this just makes it so two teams get a little less than one team would have gotten under the current system.

pros and cons of this:

pros:
-fair to both teams, rewards them equally for reaching their league's championship game.
-adds a level of excitement and realism to the game without compromising much of the current system.
-doesnt really create a rich-get-richer situation, fairly rewards teams who deserve the payout.
-gives teams that have a string of upsets and do not get home games in the playoffs a chance for a big payout that their run deserves.
-tiered system to make it applicable to all leagues.
-league specific-named championship games (randomly assigned, could add some creativity and some fun to the game).
-one game where owners can have a guaranteed payout and not have to worry about ticket sales for a championship game (which in theory and reality pretty much sell themselves).
-money given out will not have a negative affect on the current league because they will both be guaranteed promotion by then, and the league higher than they have all had opportunities to compete for the same money.

cons:
-more total money given out to championship contenders, although the team that would have had it as a "home" game would take home slightly less (2.5x expected instead of as much as 3x expected) than they would have sometimes under the old system, which gives the two teams an advantage per se.

i really like this idea, and hope that it can be implemented, as it would be fun and exciting, but most of all fair, and at the same time add a level of realism to the game at no expense of any significant game mechanics.

+1, this is a great suggestion. Make the league championship game a bowl game, and split the stadium in half. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on what the stadium should look like (maybe the union of the stadiums of the two participants, instead of a set stadium?) but overall this is a great idea.

+1...I've been doing the math on how much my team stands to make if we host the league championship (and we have a decent shot) and frankly its too much vs. what the other finalist takes home.

The point about not playing the same schedule is very valid.Ive seen leagues where 1 conference has 3 cpu teams and the other none.If you play in the one with 3 cpus your almost guaranteed to score more points than a team from the other conference.
