The citadel is basically college, with a bunch of different majors, and each different link's metal corresponding to a different field of knowledge. Cartography seems very much like it would fall under a scholarly fields, considering the known fields include ravenry, astrology, smithing, medicine, war, economics, witchcraft, etc.

Considering Sam has traveled much of Westeros, and would likely be one of the few maesters to ever travel north of the wall, it doesn't seem completely unreasonable that he would fit into that field.

Not saying the theory is entirely strong, but it's plausible I guess.

Haha, I knew someone was going to call me out on that and miss the point that it is still consistent with season 1.

The spinning thing is an astrolabe, and the one in the library that we get a close up of is exactly the same as the one shown in the opening credits sequence. I saw a screenshot of both and they have the exact same motifs engraved on them.
