An interesting thing I noticed when watching Infinity War at the time. There are several times where one of the heroes barters a stone to Thanos in exchange for Thanos sparing someone that he is actively about to kill. In every case (except for one, which I'll get to in a moment), the person that Thanos spares in that moment also gets spared later when he does The Snap. Just one more example of Thanos believing he's actually the good guy -- he keeps his promises.
Even more interesting, every single hero who barters a stone away gets Snapped out of existence later. It's almost like Thanos is punishing them for betraying their principles in order to save one person they love or care about.
The one exception I mentioned above? Thor barters a stone to Thanos in exchange for saving Loki -- who very quickly tries to surprise Thanos to take the stone back but gets killed in the attempt. Loki breached the contract, so Thanos felt free to nullify it and killed Loki in what he likely viewed as self-defense. But up until that moment, Thanos was prepared to let Loki live because a deal is a deal. Again -- Thanos thinks he's the good guy.
