Effective level is nice, but also remember that effective level doesn't do anything to determine performance/impact a team's ability to win:

"Effective level rates players by comparing the total value of a player's abilities to the average value of all players of the same position at that normal level."

So, if you're building a player for a particular purpose which may be unique as compared to other players at that position, then it is not to say that a lower effective level negatively impacts that player's effectiveness. In fact, as long as you envision exactly how you plan to use the player, and build the player's attributes in accordance with that plan, and gameplan in unison with that player, then the player will still be effective.

Effective level is determined by effective player value (that little red number under the level) which is simply how many SP it would cost in total to buy all your attributes and SAs (not counting bonuses added via EQ or VA, just the naturals) and it doesn't 'favor' major attributes in any way. It is simple arithmetic. The reason why one might think that is because #1 it is obviously more effective to get the major atts high because of the ALGs and #2 the SP value of the attributes gets ridiculous as it approaches triple digits which results in higher 'value', which can not be reached in a minor attribute in any cost-effective manner. For the most part its easy to have an effective value higher than a dot's actual level. I would assume any player who isn't did something wrong. There are exceptions- for one, it ebbs and flows. After you boost, your EF might be close to your real level sometimes but after some trains it should go back up. Also, Cs seem to be judged really harshly. A C with the same player value as a G will often be 4 or 5 EL lower. That one I can't figure out since they said its based on average player value.

Can someone help me understand this, so I know all my current dots are still very low level, but 2 of them are -1 effective level and 1 is neutral. But when I look at other people's dots in the same position and some have either equal or not as good looking abilities as mine they still somehow have a higher effective level then mines. Why is that?

I can post builds and make their builds open if needed.
But does anyone have a basic understanding of why this is?

probably because their main attribute is higher

EL is the SP needed to build that player, so when you are adding 6 and 7 SP to a player, and then ALG's take it even higher, the EL for the player is higher
