UPDATE AFTER GAME 2

There were only a couple of potentially-competitive games on tap for Game 2, and as a result we had no upsets at all. So, the rankings and the projected standings remain the same. But there were 3 games that, despite following chalk, deserve a closer look:

#10 Sydney 27, #11 Paris 20 (OT)
This game was important for the playoff hopes of both teams, and things got wild! Sydney kicked a FG early in the 4th quarter to extend their lead to 17-10, and Paris's next two possessions netted very few yards and ended in a punt and a missed FG. But poor punting by Sydney gave Paris the ball near midfield with 7:39 left in the game, and after converting a crucial 4th-&-1, Paris tied the game with a 40-yard bomb to their wide-open HB. With the game tied and facing 4th-&-2 inside their own 40, Sydney tried to convert but failed, and Paris cashed in with a FG to take a 20-17 lead with 1:11 left. But on the ensuing drive, Sydney drove down to the Paris 20 and kicked the tying FG as time expired, then got the ball first in overtime and scored the game-winning TD in under 2 minutes. Sydney's aggression late in the game almost cost them big-time, but that same aggression also helped them overcome their error and take the win. Still, this game overall did little to overturn my skepticism towards both of these teams, and Sydney in particular should not have needed overtime to win this one.

#03 Palm Bay 56, #08 Montlake 26
Palm Bay's offense got rolling in this game, putting a damper on Montlake's hopes for a surprising Season 71 after they upset ECE in their opener. But Montlake gained over 400 yards on Palm Bay thanks to some key chunk plays that almost made up for Montlake's inability to sustain or finish drives. Key word: almost. Montlake showed their defense can be very good against ECE and their offense can be very good against Palm Bay, but they have yet to put the two together at the same time in the same game, and that lack of consistency will hold Montlake back. But Palm Bay may have some question marks now on defense.

#06 New Orleans 147, CPUbu Jary 70
A 77-point win over a CPU team normally wouldn't cause any angst, but consider this: a CPU team just dropped 70 points on New Orleans, 1 game after a hopelessly-outleveled Marlborough squad hung 28 points on New Orleans. If Palm Bay has question marks on defense, New Orleans has giant red flashing lights and alarm klaxons.

PREVIEW FOR GAME 3

Some good matchups coming up Thursday night and Friday night for Game 3...

#02 ECE vs #04 All-American
ECE's unexpected loss to Montlake opened the door for the Lancers to take control of the conference. Can they step through, or will ECE slam it shut?

#05 Adriatic vs #10 Sydney
A win for Adriatic gives them the early inside track to the 2-seed, while an upset win for Sydney would put them in great position for a surprising season.

#11 Paris vs #13 Jersey HighRollers
Paris needs to get back on track with a win here, or else they could face an uphill climb in the playoff race. Jersey already faces an uphill climb, but a win over Paris would be a great start.

#06 New Orleans vs #12 Hood Rich
It's the first real opponent for the Jazz Cats this season, and their defense has prompted a lot of questions after giving up a LOT of points to two tomato-cans. Hood's offense appears to be rolling so far, so an upset of New Orleans is not impossible and would vault Hood into contention for winning the conference.

RANKINGS - AFTER GAME 3

#01 Hawaiian Kings (3-0 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat Sydney 77-10, beat HighRollers 70-3
Two real opponents, two 67-point wins. The Kings have all the momentum of a freight train, and I'm not sure if anyone can derail them. If they dropped a game at this point, I'd probably still keep them #1.

#02 ECE Respawn (2-1 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat All-American 21-11, lost to Montlake 13-7
ECE opened with an embarrasing upset loss to Montlake, but bounced back with a solid win over All-American. Their offense looks shaky so far, but their defense looks rock-solid, and ECE remains the only team that has shown they can stand up to Hawaii. But first they'll need to KO the Palookas on Sunday.

#03 Palm Bay Palookas (3-0 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat Montlake 56-26
(Full disclosure: this is my team, so I may be biased.) Despite ECE's upset loss to Montlake, I can't move Palm Bay up to #2 just on the basis of two easy CPU wins and a 30-point drubbing of Montlake... especially when ECE thumped Palm Bay 69-0 last season. But we'll talk again after the re-match on Sunday.

#04 All-American Crimson Lancers (2-1 in Elite #1)
Recent results: lost to ECE 21-11
I'm keeping All-American up high on the basis of their strong performance last season, but trailing ECE 21-3 with under 2:00 left in the game is not a good look for the Lancers. They will absolutely need more production from their offense, especially with Montlake up next.

#05 New Orleans Jazz Cats (3-0 in League #2)
Recent results: beat Hood Rich 16-3
After bleeding points to two CPU teams, New Orleans applied a tourniquet and shut down Hood Rich's offense in convincing fashion. The Jazz Cats remain the favorite to win League #2 in my eyes.

#06 Monmouth Evil Monkeys (3-0 in League #2)
Recent results: no significant games yet
Three easy games, three wins, with a fourth up next. But they then get 4th Street and Hood Rich back-to-back for their first real games of the season.

#07 Sydney Sharks (2-1 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat Paris 27-20, beat Adriatic 30-3, lost to Hawaii 77-10
Sydney saw their chance to separate themselves from the pack, and they took it, edging out Paris in overtime and then spanking Adriatic. They also got destroyed themselves by Hawaii, so they're nowhere near the top of the league, but they do have the inside-track to the #2 seed in their conference, and they can improve their position even more with a win over the HighRollers next.

#08 Adriatic Sea Wasps (2-1 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat Paris 10-7, lost to Sydney 30-3
It's starting to look like Adriatic may have just gotten hot for 3 games in the playoffs last season. Barely squeaking past Paris and getting thumped by Sydney means I need to move Adriatic back down a bit in the rankings. And with Hawaii up next, things will not get any easier for Adriatic.

#09 Montlake Huskies (2-1 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat ECE 13-7, lost to Palm Bay 56-26
Against ECE, Montlake engaged in a tight defensive struggle and somehow emerged victorious. Against Palm Bay, Montlake got into an absolute shootout but brought too many 3s to a 7-fight. Would the real Montlake Huskies please stand up?

#10 Jersey Mets (2-1 in League #2)
Recent results: lost to Hood Rich 50-41
Managed to cough up an odd loss to Hood Rich, just the latest humiliating loss to a bad team for Jersey. And yet they're somehow still in good shape to win the 2-seed in their mercifully-weak league.

#11 Paris Smexies (1-2 in Elite #1)
Recent results: beat HighRollers 24-3, lost to Adriatic 10-7, lost to Sydney 27-20
At least they beat the HighRollers to hold onto the inside track for the 4-seed, but Paris had chances to topple both Adriatic and Sydney and frittered them both away.

#12 Hood Rich Dotballers (2-1 in League #2)
Recent results: beat Mets 50-41, lost to New Orleans 16-3
Much like Montlake, Hood Rich so far has had one wide-open shootout and one gritty defensive struggle, thought they won the shootout and lost the defensive game. But if they can get a second win over the Mets later this season, the 2-seed should be theirs.

#13 Jersey HighRollers (1-2 in Elite #1)
Recent results: lost to Hawaii 70-3, lost to Paris 24-3
When your average score against human teams is a 47-3 loss, that is not a good sign at all.

#14 The 4th Street Gang (3-0 in League #2)
Recent results: no significant games yet
Yeah, they're undefeated, but all 3 of their opponents so far have been CPU teams, and 4th Street failed to hit triple-digits against any of them. The meat of their schedule is coming up soon, and 4th Street is about to be exposed.

SEMI-COMPETITIVE TEAMS
Teams with under-leveled or mostly-CPU rosters that are still good enough to be better than the Non-Competitive Teams:

#15 Plainview Bulldogs
One-owner non-boosting team with a full roster.

#16 Westbank Generals (CPU)
CPU-owned team with a higher-than-normal amount of human dots on the roster.

#17 Marlborough Mountaineers
Fully-human roster, but with mostly Prep-aged dots.

NON-COMPETITIVE TEAMS
Teams that are either CPU-owned, or human-owned with mostly-CPU rosters:

Ubu Jary
Slim Jimbos
Voodoo Daddies
College Station Aggies
LA Rams
Carthage Clash
Ridgeville Reapers

Sooooooo... Hawaii has pretty much clinched the 1-seed already, with everyone else in their conference already at 2 losses or more. I mean, do you see Hawaii losing 2 games this season? I sure don't.

RANKINGS - AFTER GAME 4

#01 Hawaiian Kings (4-0 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: beat Adriatic 41-0
Other important results: beat Sydney 77-10, beat HighRollers 70-3
Heavy is the head that wears the crown... unless you're Rocky Redskin, apparently. Paris is next, and Paris is not going to upset Hawaii.

#02 Palm Bay Palookas (4-0 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: beat ECE 20-14
Other important results: beat Montlake 56-26
(Full disclosure: this is my team, so I may be biased.) Okay, NOW I can justify bumping Palm Bay up to #2, with the Palookas defeating both ECE *and* the other team that also beat ECE. But the always-dangerous Lancers are next for Palm Bay.

#03 ECE Respawn (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: lost to Palm Bay 20-14
Other important results: beat All-American 21-11, lost to Montlake 13-7
ECE's offensive woes continued against Palm Bay, but the defense remains good enough to keep every game within reach for ECE. They get Westbank next, with a chance to catch their breath before inter-conference play begins, but their losses to Palm Bay and Montlake have now jeopardized ECE's chances of winning the conference.

#04 All-American Crimson Lancers (3-1 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: beat Montlake 13-0
Other important results: lost to ECE 21-11
The Lancers' defense notched 9 sacks and held Montlake to 200 yards in a shutout performance, but the Lancers also failed to score a TD on offense. Up next is Palm Bay, and while the Lancers have shown they can keep Palm Bay's ground attack in check, they'll need to find some offensive production as well if they want the win.

#05 New Orleans Jazz Cats (4-0 in League #2)
Game 4 result: beat a CPU squad
Other important results: beat Hood Rich 16-3
Got another easy CPU win. Next up is the Jersey Mets, but the Cats should be able to take care of business.

#06 Monmouth Evil Monkeys (4-0 in League #2)
Game 4 result: beat a CPU squad
Other important results: no significant games yet
Monmouth has one 4 tune-up games against cupcake opponents, and now they'll get their chance to expose 4th Street.

#07 Sydney Sharks (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: lost to HighRollers 27-17
Other important results: beat Paris 27-20, beat Adriatic 30-3, lost to Hawaii 77-10
Sydney had the inside track to the 2-seed... until they managed to fumble it away with an embarrassing 10-point loss to the HighRollers. Sydney now finds themselves in a 4-way tie at 2-2, though with the Slim Jimbos up next, they can at least cash in on an easy CPU win.

#08 Adriatic Sea Wasps (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: lost to Hawaii 41-0
Other important results: beat Paris 10-7, lost to Sydney 30-3
Adriatic looked thoroughly unimpressive in their loss to Hawaii. Combined with their blowout loss to Sydney, Adriatic's next game against the HighRollers has gone from "take care of business" to "must-win for a playoff spot." And the HighRollers just upset Sydney, so Adriatic needs to take this game seriously.

#09 Montlake Huskies (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: lost to All-American 13-0
Other important results: beat ECE 13-7, lost to Palm Bay 56-26
It's starting to look like Montlake's offense isn't quite up to the challenge of Elite #1... not counting the game with CPU-Westbank, Montlake has now scored only 2 TDs on offense all season long, both coming against Palm Bay. Plainview is next and should be easy prey for the Huskies, and their upset of ECE gives Montlake some cushion in the standings, but they need to get their offense sorted out if they want to have a chance in the playoffs.

#10 Jersey Mets (3-1 in League #2)
Game 4 result: beat Marlborough 153-0
Other important results: lost to Hood Rich 50-41
Coming off an easy win, Jersey faces their toughest test yet: the New Orleans Jazz Cats. If the Mets want to be more than an also-ran in this age tier, they'll need to start by upsetting the Cats.

#11 Paris Smexies (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: beat a CPU squad
Other important results: beat HighRollers 24-3, lost to Adriatic 10-7, lost to Sydney 27-20
Paris simply has not shown me any evidence that they're capable of upsetting Hawaii, and their losses to Adriatic and Sydney combined with the HighRollers upsetting Sydney have suddenly put Paris's playoff chances in jeopardy. A miracle win over Hawaii would certainly help.

#12 Hood Rich Dotballers (3-1 in League #2)
Game 4 result: beat a CPU squad
Other important results: beat Mets 50-41, lost to New Orleans 16-3
Got an easy win over a CPU squad, with another easy win lined up next. After that, Hood opens up inter-conference play with a date with Monmouth.

#13 Jersey HighRollers (2-2 in Elite #1)
Game 4 result: beat Sydney 27-17
Other important results: lost to Hawaii 70-3, lost to Paris 24-3
Showed some signs of life with a 10-point upset of Sydney, and suddenly making the playoffs doesn't look so farfetched. An upset of Adriatic would put them in the driver's seat for the 4-seed, and with the way Adriatic is fading lately, that is not impossible.

#14 The 4th Street Gang (4-0 in League #2)
Game 4 result: beat a CPU squad
Other important results: no significant games yet
4th Street thus far has not looked impressive against their CPU opponents. Monmouth is next, and I have a feeling 4th Street is in for a beating.

SEMI-COMPETITIVE TEAMS
Teams with under-leveled or mostly-CPU rosters that are still good enough to be better than the Non-Competitive Teams:

#15 Plainview Bulldogs
One-owner non-boosting team with a full roster.

#16 Westbank Generals (CPU)

#17 Marlborough Mountaineers
Fully-human roster, but with mostly Prep-aged dots.

NON-COMPETITIVE TEAMS
Teams that are either CPU-owned, or human-owned with mostly-CPU rosters:

Ubu Jary
Slim Jimbos
Voodoo Daddies
College Station Aggies
LA Rams
Carthage Clash
