I had a play where I primarily wanted one receiver targeted and wanted him looked at for a while because scouting showed he would come open late in the route.

So I had that receiver in the first four custom check down slots.

The fifth one was another receiver to go to it the other guy didnt get open.

Well as it turns out the defense changed and the primary receiver is doubled covered all day long.

The secondary receiver is single covered and out in front of his defender on a short crossing route the whole play.

The play is called half a dozen or more times already (its a mean nothing game I didnt put too many options into the offense).

The QB does nothing but throw to the primary receiver.

Even though he is double covered.

And its not like he is dumping it. The wideout is 45 yards down field before he throws sometimes.

WHY is the QB ignoring the fifth check down every single time and throwing into double instead of single coverage?

Is the fifth check down a fraud?

No. And you should not do it that way. 2 progressions in a row.... OK. 3 in a row.... Just maybe. But I would never do it.

By doing it 4 in a row, you are essentially eliminating your QB's quick read ability (if he has any points spent in it) for one.

For another , you are completely selling out to the play with no concern that the opposin DC might actually change something up.

5th progression does happen, but admittingly it is not frequent. But QB tactic settings, among other factors, do determine how quickly he will cycle through those progressions. If you want to hot a receiver you think will be open, maybe put him as the 1st 2 progressions. But then give more options.

Forgive me for spelling errors, on phone and I have fat fingers

Okay let me expand the question then.

How many check down boxes would i need to make sure a WR on a route straight down field will clear zone coverage? Say two parts, clear the under zones and then the deep ones?

And yeah I do not generally do this that much but there were not too many openings in this passing D that showed themselves to quick perusal other than this wideout deep and one other play (that worked well).

Heh well we threw that pass 16 times and only 2 or 3 of them went to the check down, the first one not happening till 6 minutes into the third quarter even.

The "check down" being the 5th progression? If so, your lucky it happened twice.

If you want that certain target on a streak to get past short, med, and deep zone... Make him 2nd and 3rd read. Or maybe 3rd and 4th read. Definitely unwise (IMO) to make him the first 4 reads

There was no one really open on that play early on.

it was maybe not the best play to go at but I didnt want to spend more than ten minutes scouting and doing AI.

So I am not surprised it didnt work. I am just puzzled that it takes that long to check down.

Is that a change? Seemed to run through the progressions more quickly in past???
