I do think, some 'graphical upgrades' to the site, wouldn't hurt its appeal imo.

I thought it might be cool to create some funky little cartoon football players. Maybe I will get around to it now.

After signing up to this a couple days ago, and quickly adding this site to my addictions and the trolling the forums.
I found the game itself to be very in depth, and appeal to many of my fellow sports & strategy friends, I've tried to get some referrals.

The couple people who tried to check it out w/out signing up asked me a few VERY simple basic questions I was surprised to realize weren't answered on the pages w/out signing up.
So felt I should pass along these

Is the game free to play?Does it cost anything extra to buy a team, stadium or more players etc?
How long has it been in Beta, and when does it plan being no longer in beta?(General history is needed for the game free to view style)
Why can't I browse the forums to see how active it is? Many online sites have a running stat of # of registered or active or online members. Is there active chat room, or just forums?
Do I actually play in games and control my player during the game, meaning I'm gonna have to regularly schedule times I can devote to the game?
Can I see more screen shots other then the 3 on the home page so I can see more of the game?
Are their $ or product prizes? What about if I put $ into the game, any chance on seeing some of that back? Is there "free" and "pay" league differences?
(Not talking about profit, just talking about a full loss of everything I invest other then entertainment)

While I was able to answer most of the questions they asked, the lack of info presented to them w/out signing up and the fact the game is in beta with NO back round info about the game/site etc readily available, they were quickly "turned off" the idea.
(Side note, it was rather hard to answer some of these questions w/out forum search function)

Personally I think the game is great has great potential, and I'm glad I've invested the several hours I already have in reading forums and learning, I can FULLY understand my friends hesitance to sign up to something that gives them so very little info about itself w/out a sign up.

Make the front page and referral page like any other fantasy football intro page. Or better yet, make it look like a free tour (kind of like a porn site or something). Take them through a few pages and then ask for their info at the end.

What GLB should do for new people who arent registered is this....

They see the exact same website registered people do. They can click thru the Leagues, view teams, view players, watch games, scout the market place etc etc. Just that they cant actually DO anything until they register.

There are a lot of web-based games where they handle it this way. People can navigate the whole site basically but just cant DO anything while not registered.

Forums....

You could keep them all locked out (private).
Or could make them viewable, just they cant post or start threads.

Either way im down with.

Just further on all that, here's a way that it could be done....

For registered users, like us, our "home" page (which is also a tab on the menu) takes us to our own profile page, listing all our players and teams.

There isnt a "home" or main page for GLB really. What is currently there is outdated now, and wont really reel in people either.

So, what you could do is make the "home" tab mean Goallineblitz.com (the index page, the main point of entry). Next to it you would create a tab called something like MY PROFILE, or AGENT CP (control panel). This would be what is currently our "home" page.

So, for an unregistered user, they would see all the tabs across the menu bar that we see when they enter goallineblitz.com. The only difference being that certain tabs were grayed out that they couldn't enter them (ie, cant DO stuff).

Those tabs would be AGENT CP, INBOX, CHAT. All the rest could be entered. That means if they click FORUM, they can read/view threads, but cant post. This always is a good way to make new people register. Because people often check out forums and see chat going on, and want a place to join in and chat. They just wont be able to PM people, post in threads or enter the live chat feature.

Marketplace they can enter, and view stuff, but all the functionality would be grayed out. Or, just gray out MARKET PLACE as well if it's easier.

Unregistered people can view LEAGUES and watch games. And that too would be a good promotional device to draw people in.

Lastly, that leaves what the new HOME page would look like. The graphics guy Bort has now can create something far more appealing, jazzed up. Some ideas off the top of my head would be......an ESPN-like ticker tape update about the current pro-league season progress across all the regions constantly running at the bottom (only pro-league), other boxes with info and resources and stats that are also interesting for us registered people as well. Not changelog type info, but more fun stuff like best avatar comps, best player of the week, etc, fun facts, maybe some actual articles/blogs written by agents and show-cased (maybe mods choose the best articles for every season or week), etc etc. Basically it would look kinda like ESPN.com (if you go to that page now), but just more low-key and not so complex etc. But that's kinda the idea you would have for the new "home" page----a resource/info/tickertape/stats/articles/pictures/fun-facts type of stuff. A page that registered users will also visit, and is more attractive for unregistered new people. It's the face of the game (the home page) and should therefore try to attract people with all that kind of stuff that would also show them how "professional" and "well-run" GLB would be by seeing such a home page.

I'd think viewable, but you cannot post until you're a registered user in the game.

Otherwise I really think that'd help out. I've gotten oh...5 referrals that've not vanished after the initial sign-up, out of probably 20 I've gotten to sign up...and it was just badgering on my part to get them that far...I knew the game was not very new-user-friendly when going to the referral page, so I'd end up just saying something like "Don't worry about the banning stuff they say there, just sign up and you'll see what I mean, it's pretty good..." yada yada...

I don't like having to 'sell' someone else's product for them...

I like some of this idea in general. It brought up another idea about having an official "newspaper" with user submitted articles. If there was an incentive to submit an article (requiring approval from an editor of course), such as you get 500 FP's or something, I bet we could get quite a bit of content submitted on a regular basis.
