You are missing the point.
You are not comparing current age 200 dots to current age 250 dots.
The old effective level were comparing players made in say.. S16 to players made in S6. The effective levels were out of date, most everyone knew that.
The new values are up to date and correct now. You are thinking that the new values to reach up to 85 just extended from the previously used values. That is incorrect.
Here's a more concrete, but hypothetical example, that may help you understand.
Previous System: Player value of a level 60 HB might have been 1k with an effective level of 70.
Current System: Player value of a level 60 HB (lets use this guy http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2108204 ) is near 1k and effective level of 60.
So if you had a HB yesterday that had 1k player value and was listed with an effective value of say.. 70, today he still has a player value of 1k but is ranked as an effective value of 60.
You lost nothing, it is simple using more correct or up to date values.
And i'll add, if bort doesn't run this again for 8 seasons, you will see the same (though to a lesser degree since more builds are built this way now) thing happen again where player values get higher and higher, stretching where they are listed as their effective level until the next update.
