I like the idea Mat...I just don't think it should be binding in anyway. Here is some food for thought.
The LOI should be used more as a recruiting tool but also as a reputation measurement as well. It should be tracked on the player's profile (i.e. showing the player's history of commits & retractions) as well as the team's profile (showing the same). This would allow future recruiters or prospects to gauge whether this player/team can be counted on to follow thru with their LOI.
I don't want to get too far ahead of things but if the LOI is treated in the way I described above you could then extend its functionality at some point to include things like "Expected Depth Chart" (Starter, Backup, STOP, etc.) or "Role with Team" (with some basic things you could promise a recruit by position like ball thrown to them "x" times per game for a WR...or blitzed 10 times per game for a LB, etc.).
