I thought it was whatever distance you wanted minus 17? So it would be 13

This is correct.

From the tactics page - Max Field Goal Range, from the place hold to the uprights, LOS + 17 yds

Wouldn't you put 30 in the distance box if you wanted to try from the 13 yard line as max distance?

You are correct. Dr. E, despite the impressive credentials, is wrong.

They'll attempt whatever yardage is in that box. If you put 67 in there, yes, you would attempt FGs up to 67 yards. That would mean you would kick from anywhere closer than midfield.

Everybody stop overthinking this, every level of real football calculates how far a FG is the same way. Having a range of 50 yards in the box means you won't attempt any from further out than your opponent's 33 yard line, because at the 33 yard line the snap takes you back 7 yards, to the 40 yard line, and the goalposts are level with the back of the end zone, which is 10 additional yards. That's why it has that verbiage of "take the yard line you'd like to kick from and add 17" or whatever.

Just put the length of field goals that you want to attempt, max, in the box. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Or, alternatively, just look at what you have in the box, and then look at what length FGs your kicker has been trying, and it should make sense to you.

Simply put: FG range is whatever you set it at. 50 yard range is 50, not 67. The range WILL take into account the snap and back of end zone adjustments.
(If at 50 yds, you will have to be at the opponent's 33 yard line to attempt)
SLug nailed it
