Well, Pete Carroll was the coach when Brady was drafted, but yeah, Bellichek was coach when Bledsoe went down and Brady took over.

Edit: While they weren't as good as they have been onder Bellichek, they didn't really "suck" under Parcells, at least not his 2nd through 4th seasons there.

But they weren't really a true regular playoff threat until Bellichek became coach (hence my statement). And I said what I said based on some NFL history. The Saint's were also a crap team for many, many years... until Peyton and Breeze came along. They, along with the Pats, aren't the only teams like that as well. Some teams wax and wane (Steelers... Raiders... Cowboys... Packers... ect, ect.)... they have good stretches and down times but you KNOW they'll be back again. But other teams simply 'flash' for a while then disappear back into nothing. 49'ers... Bengals... Detroit... ect, ect, ect. Sustaining quality simply seems much harder for some organizations... and somewhat easier for others. In some cases you can point to the team owners... in other cases you can point to fate. And I think that is true in both cases (teams that keep being relevant and teams that are one-hit-wonders). Just an observation.

Parcells had the Pats in the AFC Championship his final season ('96) and won 4 different coach of the year awards in his 2nd season ('94). Pete Carroll is the one that turned them to shit again between Parcells and Bellichek.

Carroll went 27-21 as Patriots coach...Pretty good record if you ask me but they were nothing like they've been under Bill B...not to mention Carroll did draft key players that led them to winning a few titles

Bobby Grier's awful mishandling of player personnel for most of both eras turned them to crap. Actually the top of his first 3 drafts under Parcell's were solid (Bledsoe, McGinest, Law), but the Glenn pick drove the wedge that got Bill to leave town. Under Carroll/Grier ... the team had *3* of 37 picks still on the roster, for Carroll's final game. Kevin Faulk, Damien Woody, and Robert Edwards were his only decent picks, and thanks to the retarded "beach" rookie pro bowl game - one of those had his career cut short, in Edwards.

So Bill Belichick got the player personnel input that Carroll never got ... Kraft was quoted saying "In fairness to Pete, I didn't give him the power he should have had," and that most of his disagreements with Grier, Carroll ended up being right in hindsight.

But before we throw Grier too far under the bus, two weeks before being fired and replaced by Scott Pioli at the start of the Belichick era ... in his final draft, he took a certain no name QB from Michigan in the 6th round ...

Anyways ... speaking of those folks, will be interesting to see if Pioli can unravel the utter disaster that is the Falcon's salary cap mess (2nd worst dead cap situation, behind only the Saints). And Bobby Grier's son was named the new GM of the Dolphins, and had Laremy Tunsil fall into his lap at 13, and the CB they took in the 2nd round looked solid as well, so maybe he won't be the outright disaster his dad was as a GM.

I'm a life-long Miami Dolphins fan, and even I felt *terrible* about that injury.

Wow. Just curious but how long is 'life long'? FYI, I watched the entire undefeated season. Still one of the best seasons I've ever witnessed (sorry Bears and Pats fans.)

New England "Fucked When Brady Retires"iots

Steelers are going to be a top team till every member of the Rooney family is eradicated... and probably beyond that.

It takes Class to be the best franchise.

One Coach's exploitations of every loophole that exist in football will not have a lasting impact on the quality of an otherwise garbage franchise that ends up with AWFUL rosters every season.
