I used to advertise via Google.
Been a while so I forget details.
But basically you set up parameters of what your website is about, what search terms you would like to trigger a chance for your ad to show up. You then set some parameters on how much you want to spend per month, and how much you will "bid" for search terms - popular search terms will be pricier. Your ad then shows up on the search results to the right when people search your terms, a random chance for that which depends upon how many other people are advertising that term and how much you bid for that term. It can also show up on websites that have Google Ad space (they are being paid by google per click for space on their page) whose pages are related to your search terms in some fashion (toyed with this once too but not so much so forget).
And do not take that I no longer do it to mean that it wasn't profitable and it failed, I was just secretly helping someone out with traffic to their website to fluff them emotionally when they were going through a bad time, long story - but it worked, enough so that after a couple years my help was no longer needed. I spent very little, a hundred a month or so, and it pulled in a good number of people per day (more than ten, less than 500, forget the numbers exactly and of course it varied by day).

Taking those two together and their own data on new accounts, they probably have a good idea of how effective it is.

Relax people. Advertising takes time. They donated a case of GLB t-shirts to charity. It will take several months for those to reach third world nations by shipping container. Once there, expect the word to spread like wildfire from village chief to village chief.
