Is the need to protect against KL overrated. Looking at WL corners/safeties etc they generally have 2-3 KL in a whole season. Why bother protecting against something that happens that infrequently

Not over-rated at all.
Most of those Safeties and corners are facing off against WR's and TE's with high enough carrying to resist knocked loose on dots who aren't built for it (60+ carrying).
Any CB or Safety built for KL's will force considerably more KL's (10+ a season).

More importantly, the whole point of a power receiver is to be able to break tackles and rack up YAC. Carrying is one of the main components of the break tackle roll, without carrying you'll have a much tougher chance at breaking tackles.

I did not know that Carry was directly tied to Breaking Tackles... thought it just kept you from Fumbling when attempting to break them. Good info to have there.
