It's been a long road for both of these teams heading into the League Championship game. With only 1 loss between the 2 of them, they have both been sitting atop the rankings throughout the second half of the season with no one looking to threaten them. And how often do we get to see both top seeds manage to avoid an upset in the playoffs.
The Dead (there's a name I haven't said in ages!) were on another level through most of the regular season with a few close games later in the season. They were on a 14 game win streak before falling to Sahara in tight battle that was decided by 7 points and looked to foreshadow a playoff rematch.
Once the playoffs came around it was clear that the Dead would be rising from their graves. A first round massacre of the Joe's. In the second round they took a 35-3 lead into halftime against TAP. It proved to be more than enough as they were shutout in the second half as TAP could only muster 14 more points.
The Conf Championship did in fact turn into a rematch against the lone team that beat them during the season. In the 1st Q it was all TDP as they took a 21-3 lead. Sahara was not laying down though as they scored the first 10 points of the 2nd Q to make it 21-13. The battle would continue through the 2nd Q and TDP would go into the half up 31-20. In the 3rd Q, TDP struck first with a FG but Sahara closed the gap with a late 3rd Q TD to pull within 7. Luckily for the Dead, that was the last time Sahara got on the scoreboard and the Dead put up 2 more FGs as the defensive slugfest continued.
Over in Ele, we have BSS moving on up. Like TDP, they steamrolled some opponents and were in a few close battles throughout the season. Regardless of the scoreboards, they won every single game in the regular season and are looking for that perfect season to wrap things up and head to WL with a bang.
The Sunami playoff run wasn't without it's bumps but luck sure seemed to be on this squads side. After destroying the BullDawgs in the first round they had to contend with a deadly Philly team in the second round. It was a back and forth battle all the way to the end but BSS managed to outlast Philly for a 1 point win.
In the Conf Championship they were set to face an equally tough ICB squad and at the end of the first half it was looking like BSS had their luck run out facing a 21 point deficit. By the end if the 3rd Q that luck seemed to take a complete 180 with BSS putting up 21 points to ICBs 0 and we had ourselves a tie game heading into the 4th. A little more than 6 minutes into the 4th and BSS hit a 50 yd FG to take the lead. It was on the defense now but with under 6 minutes left ICB was driving. On a drive that started on their 20, ICB converted 2 pivotal 3rd down plays for gains of 16 and 26 yds. With 2 minutes left they managed to make it to the BSS 8 yd line. Boom, loss of 2 1/2 on 1st down. But then the D gave up a 9 1/2 yd run that set up 3rd & goal at the 1 1/2 yd line. Big moment for the D to step up and did they ever as FS Fernandez sniffed out the screen pass easily for a 3 yd loss. ICB would have to settle for a FG to tie it up and head to OT. BSS would go on to score the game winning TD in OT and again escaped with a close win.
Now these two face off in the big one. TDPs #1 rush attack vs BSSs #1 pass attack. The top ranked D's from both conferences. And my pick, for old time's sake, is going to be the freshly reminted Dead Presidents.
