i have had a pretty successful first season with this RB, but in games vs good teams he always seems to get stopped after 1 or 2 yards. I think i need to improve his speed, but i would like to hear other people's opinions on where to go with this build:

he definitely needs more speed. it's unfortunate, but no matter what type of HB you're trying to build, speed really is the most important attribute. I cant really think of any HB build where you wouldn't want speed to be your highest attribute, and also have all of your equipment. if you're concerned about the long haul, i'd probably retire him and start over. if you just care about the next bunch of seasons, then you can definitely fix him up by just putting your next 50 or so SP into speed, and moving your equipment over there. just my opinion tho, take it with a grain of salt, but i've had pretty good success with making HBs as fast as (reasonably) possible.

also, don't get discouraged by good teams stopping you for short gains. it's really really hard to run up the middle in this game. a good d-line seems to beat a good o-line most of the time.

For a power back always start with power. But you should have eq into speed.

I agree that Speed is important to a PB, more so in recent seasons, but I don't think it needs to be the highest attribute. Taking Strength to 84 or so, then Carrying to 80 would still let you get Speed to 77. By end build you'd have a PB with Strength 100, Carrying 86 (+6 from VA) and Speed 80 (+58 EQ) which would be a sweet build.

You think that build would be better than the same thing but speed and strength reversed? I dont.

Agreed, you should always start with your primary attribute. I just dont think theres any place for that archetype at end build against elite competition.

Gart's right here. As far as breaking tackles goes, I've never noticed any real difference between 100 strength and 83 strength. The difference in speed though is rather noticeable.

We are talking about a PB here, or so I assumed from Kanyeezy's comment. Personally, I think a Combo with decent strength would be more effective. But why would you build a PB and throw all SP into Speed early on when it isn't a Primary?

I think this is solid, and tried-and-true advice. On all fronts.

There's nothing wrong with powerbacks, and while a powerback certainly might have all gear in speed, it is unlikely that speed should be his highest natural attribute.

But you will need to find an offense that values a powerback and knows how to use him, and you will also need to be content with very pedestrian statlines compared to the high-production elusives. That doesn't mean you don't provide value to your team.

Gonna call bullshit on that one.

Look at the top 7 teams in the game.
14 elusive backs
6 scat backs
3 combo backs
1 power back

Think it's a coincidence that the best teams in the game don't use power backs?

And how did that 1 power back do against the other 5 teams?
3 ypc (lolhali), 1.7 ypc, 1.5 ypc, 0.4 ypc, 2.3 ypc.

now i know you'll say that it's because he's in short yardage situations, where that ~2 ypc is acceptable, but that's not even the case. the vast majority of his touches are coming on first and second down. power backs are terrible.

I 2nd that... And I learned that the hard way. My power back was decent in the lower levels. Once he got into the 40's... He was a liability. Putting the ball on the turf alot... Even with 77+ carry. I love my scat way more.

Powerback are like Rushing QB's.
Once good, but driven into the dirt.

Rushing QBs are bad now because they're easy to stop.
Power HBs are bad now because they just aren't very viable with all the nerfs they've received.

1. They slow way down going through the line while defenders navigate through crowds much faster.
2. Breaking tackles greatly destroy their morale/energy.
3. Making tackles are much easier now whereas breaking tackles is harder... oh, and DvG.
4. ect ect ect
