How do you judge CBs?

The obvious answer is by build, but what about guys with hidden builds?

I've been using (PD+INT)/TKL. I consider anything 1 or above to be elite.

However, that formula shortchanges those who get a lot of special teams tackles and tackles on running plays. Additionally, it doesn't take the whole Aggressive I-get-more-picks-but-miss-3-tackles-per-game thing into account either.

I've thought about grading on the basis of whoever has the fewest balls thrown their way, but that leaves room for error too. If a CB plays on a dominant team, he's still going to get thrown at a decent amount because the AI for the losing team is trying to mount a comeback.

So...how do you grade corners?

i look at their agility first. then their stamina, vision and speed.

when i look at their stats i look for pd's and int's. if those are high then either the corner is good or they play bad competition. i have to look at the league too to see if the stats are just inflated. tackles mean you either play against the run a lot or people throw on you a lot.

It can be tricky to grade them by looking at game statistics. There's no way of knowing how many tackles were them tagging runners or them having to tackle the WR that they failed to cover properly.

My CB doesn't get too many numbers but it's mostly because they just don't throw to his side very much.

I would advise against using tackles in the formula at all especially since most of my CB's tackles were him shooting through and picking up a RB that the D-line didn't get. Some of those were TFL as well.

I'd scan their actual abilities and skills, then look for missed tackles. I think you have to spend some time though and look for plays where a TD was scored or a big play given up by the person the CB was covering.

In short (too late, I know) with the CB position I think reviewing the replays is the only real way to rate them.

with CB there is nonthing clear cut, all you can to is take every thing into account and compare with other CB's.

Yep. Lemme go back and edit that.

The formula also doesn't cover CB's who play on teams with terrible LB's and DL. My CB spent tons of time filling the alley last season.

The CB position is one if not he hardest to judge. Too many things to go on.

If we had a stat that show how many TD's given up, how many passes compeleted on, or how many passes compeleted on over 20 yards, or all three stats. Then you would have a way tell who's good and who's shit.

They could just add a stat called "Targets" to tell you how many times his WR got thrown to, that would help most of that.

Until it was done in a zone. But I agree. i suggested this but I think it would be rather hard to implement. I go back for my team every game and count the number of times that I was thrown at, completed on, etc...

Again it's easy to be the critic and point out flaws in the formula but that just shows how hard it is to judge a good corner from a lucky one. My CB has gotten quite a few tackles where we're running nickel and is either covering the slot receiver or is next to him, the other CB blows his coverage, the WR makes the reception, and my CB breaks coverage to tackle the receiver. That takes the value of tackles from a negative to a positive.

Unfortunately the best way to scout a corner is to watch tape. Lots and lots of tape. Watch what types of receivers and routes he has trouble with then see what types he blankets.

they should have a catches allowed stat just like linemen should have sacks allowed

IDK but i see weird zone coverages where 2 CBS cover the outside WR but the coverage leaves the slot WR wide open.
