Hedgehog’s Power Rankings – Week Eighteen(Rd 2. Playoff Edition)

Introduction

The Conference Championships next week plays out with the script unchanged in the Eastern Conference. #1 Queen City Black Cats & #2 Sudbury Spartans dish it out for the Eastern Conference cup. The Saskatchewan Beavers come back and will face off the #2 Vancouver Vindicators in an unlikely Western Conference Championship battle.

These rankings factor in only the past four games of all teams played (the last two regular season games and the playoff games) to reflect more the idea that the in the playoffs, it’s a clean state for everyone involved. That means the rankings for the top four teams get shuffled a bit.

On an interesting note, no team in Canada A6 that depends predominantly on the pass to win games is represented this deep in the playoffs. The four teams here this season tend to run more or have a more balanced offensive playbook.

Round Two - Playoff Power Rankings

The Final Four

1.-y – Queen City Black Cats – (14-2)
-The two-headed dragon of Ben Jeudah and Tyler Nixon leads the Queen City Black Cats for their second trip into the Eastern Conference Championship. The Black Cats have run roughshod over their last two playoff opponents; the dynamic duo ran for 231 yards against the Husker Maniacs in the second round for 4 touchdowns. Now, they come up against the team that’s allowed the least rush yards in the playoffs so far – the Sudbury Spartans. The last time these two teams met the Black Cats edged out a 20-17 win. To repeat they’re going to need to control line the line of scrimmage and score some points against the best D in yards allowed in this season’s playoffs.

2. – Saskatchewan Beavers – (9-7)
-Surprised? Since the loss to the Calgary Thunder in Week 14, this team has gone four straight including the victory against the Sasquatches. Those two solid wins, including the comeback victory against the Icemen, send the Beaver’s to the #2 spot. With a solid HB in Grigs Allmoon (#3 in rush yards & tied for first in rush TDs in the playoffs) this team is a solid threat on ground on both sides of the ball. And they can pass - the best QB in playoff pass yards, Megan Hart, remaining is a Beaver. The #2 Vancouver Vindicators face them next week in what could be a close game if you look at the playoff stats. The last time they faced their opponents was all the way back in Week 4 – a 20-38 loss.

3. – Sudbury Spartans – (14-2)
-Looking at the playoff stats, the Spartans seem to follow this credo: “Defense Wins Games.” They have the least number of points scored against them plus the least number of rush yards and pass yards of any team remaining in the playoffs. Their relative lack of scoring compared to the other three in the playoffs is why their down a spot from last week (remember, my rankings are based off win-loss and margin of victories- they’ve scored the least of teams remaining). They go next week in a close game against the Queen City Black Cats that, along with FLGator, I predict will hinge on one, maybe two, mistakes.

4.-y – Vancouver Vindicators – (13-3)
-This team won against the Calgary Thunder by capitalizing on the opposition’s mistakes. Of 6 touchdowns scored, four were started off by amazing defensive highlights – 3 INTs (one directly ran for a TD) and a 4th down stop deep in Thunder territory. The Vindicators were a good defensive team in the regular season and repeat that trend with stopping the run: they’re second in rush yards/game allowed in the playoffs and post no rush TDs against them. Their Western Conference Championship opponents – the Beavers – play into that. But they do have a large chink in their armor: they’ve given up the most pass TDs of any team in the playoffs and the most pass yards per game.

The Next Four

5. –Manitoba Icemen – (11-5)
6. – Halifax Hashishim – (13-3)
7. – Calgary Thunder – (10-6)
