Alright, after a close game, BTB dropped a spot in the rankings and Hollywood moved up a little.

And I'm going to have to do some explaining as to why BTB's still above Hollywood.

Remember my formula works like this:
Overall Points = Quality Win points + Success Points

Hollywood's got the Quality win component by the balls (the maximum of 100 points in this category), it's the Success points part that they struggle with.

For the whole season, what Hollywood's put up has been:
2.746 __ Milwaukee Marauders
5.421 __ Florida State WarChant
27.924 __ VEGAS Goodfellas
-0.615 __ Florida Sharks
-32.569 __ Iowa City Pariahs
0.050 __ Windsor Warriors
27.202 __ Choctaw Cracker Party
31.424 __ Midway Monsters
20.891 __ Beer Town Brawlers

So they've had several games that they've won, but the Success points were either not in their favor, or it was almost even. I didn't see this with my testing of the system from last year's games....positive numbers were almost always associated with a W.

BTB on the other hand:
4.016 __ Windsor Warriors
2.622 __ Choctaw Cracker Party
3.209 __ Midway Monsters
70.708 __ Minneapolis Masterminds
35.914 __ Atlanta Scorpions
38.821 __ American Cardinals
10.671 __ Windycity Menace
38.638 __ J Villains
-20.891 __ Hollywood Misfits

So they've had some close games, but haven't had any negative values except for today's loss.

Those success points earn Hollywood 54.8 points (15th) in the Overall Score, while BTB's accumulated Success Points earn them 77.4 Overall Points (8th).

So while Hollywood's been winning games they've managed to do it in a way that isn't 100% reflected in my formula. It's possible that they've won games on several big plays, and maybe my bonus for a big play isn't big enough, so that my formula better rewards team who can reliably earn decent chunks of yardage, but I'm not sure.

So there's the preemptive explanation to everyone who bitches....lol

Thanks,
StickMan

Like I said we don't really care where we are ranked. It's fun to take a look at but all we are concerned about is the standings.

I'll tell you where I think the difference is though. We've played the toughest schedule so far and it would make sense that it's harder to rack up the "success points" against the tougher competition. The rest of our schedule is, and no offense to these teams, but relatively easy compared to the first half. Save for Windy City all the rest of our opponents are sub-.500, including the 4 lowest ranked teams in the East whom BTB has already played.

These rankings are fine with me. it only confirms that there is still a lot of football left to play ! These rankings may change a bit when we have our turn at Minneapolis, Atlanta, and the J Villains.

I think success points have something to do with big plays or something.

I like it... but in the back of my head I can remember going 0-2 against Beer Town in the BBB. Good Job Stick... it will be cool to see how it works out come the end of the season.

We have always been reasonable people ! Just had the misfortune of dealing with 2 seasons of unreasonable circumstances.

Quality Wins:
You get +1 points for every win of opponents you beat. You beat a 3-1 team, you get 3 points. These are cumulative throughout the season. Later in the season, that team is 7-1, you now have 7 points from that same victory.
You get -1 point for every loss of a team who beats you. You get beat by a 1-3 team, you get -3 points. Later in the season, that team is 1-7, you have -7 points from that game.

The Success Points I've explained previously somewhere, but briefly, you get up to 1 point per offensive play depending on how far you make it. On First down, you need to get 45% of the way to a first down to get the full 1 point. Second down is 60% of the way, 3rd and 4th down, you have to get the 1st down to get the full point. You do however get partial credit. So on 1st and 10 if you pick up 3 yards, you get 0.667 points.
I also have modifiers for TD's, FG's, TO's , success in the red zone, and big plays (>20 yards).
Each team's offense gets a score (the lower your opponents score = the better your defense is playing, since you've held them to lower success)
The maximum score you can put up against a crummy team is capped on a per game basis, and the amount of points you can lose on a play is capped (I didn't want someone getting sacked on 3rd and 0.5 to go losing 10 points, but they do still lose 2 points.

The scores that I put up above are the team's score minus their opponents score to get an entire team score. ie. BTB scored 37.618 against Hollywood. Hollywood scored 58.509, so the final success score for the game was BTB -20.891 and Hollywood +20.891

Thanks,

Seems reasonable enough to me. Hollywood gets dinged because we may very well have just been really lucky thus far. Like Pythagorean standings, sort of.
