Hedgehog's Power Rankings - Week Six
Movers and Shakers
Biggest Risers: Portsmouth Cavaliers (+8) and the Calgary Thunder (+6)
Biggest Drop: Revelstoke Revolution and Winnipeg Warriors (-5)
Power Rankings
The Top Contenders
1. ( 1/+1) - Queen City Black Cats - (6-0)
The Black Cats snatch the top spot this week after mauling the Montreal Canadiens. They’re ranking higher than any of the 6-0 team for two reasons: 1) three cupcakes aside, they’ve beaten soundly the Canadiens and the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force and 2) their margin of victory in all games have been 30+ points. Look to them being 7-0 next week when they face the Iqaluit Arctic Wolves
2. (1/-1) - Saskatchewan Sasquatches - (6-0)
The Saskatchewan Sasquatches enter Week 7 undefeated with only one quarter player where they were losing. They lead the league in passing yards and TJ Brockton and Co. will look to bring that their ace passing attack against the Vinland Vikings in the mid-season game of the week.
3. (4/+1) - Vinland Vikings - (6-0)
The Vikings escape the shootout with the Icemen with a win. But have they shown the rest of the West a weakness the others can capitalize on? Maybe looking at how both teams performed against the Manitoba Icemen could answer the question – but the definitive answer will be next week in Game 7 when they bring the top Western Conference rushing attack on the field.
4. (3/-1) - Halifax Hashishim - (6-0)
The Hashishim are in the middle of facing the cupcakes, and that’s why they’ve dropped a spot this week. The team with the biggest chip on their shoulders will be trouncing the Preachers next game to bring their record up 7-0.
5. (5/-)- Cold Lake Wolverines - (6-0)
Of all the 6-0 teams, the combined record of their opponents is 6-24; facing no opponents with a winning record yet. Is this team overrated? They and everyone else will find out come next week when they face the Manitoba Icemen.
6. (6/0) - Sudbury Spartans - (5-1)
Four wins in the past four games keep the Spartans in the #6 spot for this week as they cruised to victory against the Boreal. They’ll be facing the Destruction Bay Dragons next week before heading to the Black Cats for a challenging Week 8.
7. (8/+1) - Cheyenne Mountain Air Force - (5-1)
The Cheyenne Mountain Air Force go back to their winning ways and Champagne Room tops the receiving and receiving touchdown charts this week in a great win against the Flint Tropics. The Air Force will face an overrated Cavaliers team next week before a grueling two-game set against the Hashishim and the Husker Maniacs.
8. (9/+1) - Hillsburgh Hillbillies - (5-1)
Five straight games in a row have seen the Hillbillies rise up the rankings steadily. They’ve shown they’re a step above the mid-tiered Western Conference teams and they have an easy win against the Smoke coming up next.
The Dark Horses
9. (7/-2) - Nebraska Husker Maniacs - (5-1)
The Husker Maniacs have only faced one winning team so far this season and they lost that in a very tight game against the Hashishim. Right now, they’re in a three game stretch against the 0-3 cupcakes of the East and will easily emerge 7-1 by the time they face the Cheyenne Mountain Air Force.
10. (12)/+2 - Vancouver Vindicators - (5-1)
The Vindicators jump up two slots in their shutout win against the Outlaws. This team on paper looks like they have all the pieces and should win next week against the Guerillaz and the Toronto Smoke afterwards.
11. (10/-1) - Manitoba Icemen - (4-2)
I’ve kept mentioning the Icemen because they are a good team that seems to be just a notch lower in the quality than the top flight of Canada A6. They could have won their game with the Vikings but there’s something telling with closer than usual wins against the likes of the Warriors and the Revolution.
12. (11/-1) - Montreal Canadiens - (4-2)
The Canadiens have holes to plug in their game – this team can beat the losers in the East well enough but stiffer opposition gives them problems. If they want to keep from slipping in the rankings they need to find a way to win bigger against equal or worse opponents and to put up more of a fight against the Big Dogs in the East.
On the Bubble
13. (21/+8) - Portsmouth Cavaliers - (3-3)
-Three wins vs. the cupcakes have them shoot up the rankings to what will be the highest they reach this season.
14. (20/+6) - Calgary Thunder - (3-3)
-The Thunder win a close one; too soon to tell where they could be going this season
15. (13/-2) - Flint Tropics - (3-3)
-When faced with a real team the Tropics fold.
16. (16/-) - Destruction Bay Dragons - (3-3)
-The easy part of the season’s over – look to them to drop next week
17. (15/-2) - Saskatoon Guerillaz - (3-3)
-Good enough with the rest of the Western Conference; just can’t play with the bigger boys
18. (14/-4) - Calgary Wrestlers - (3-3)
-They’re back to playing their level again; can they win next week?
The Hopefuls
19. (23/+4) - Iqaluit Arctic Wolves - (2-4)
-The OT win sends the Wolves up the ranks this week.
20. (17/-3) - Red Deer Blue Elk - (2-4)
-Seems like they lose big to the good teams and win big against the garbage – lucky for them that’s what their facing three weeks in a row.
21. (25/+4) - St. John’s Salty Dogs - (2-4)
Good win against the Red Deer Blue Elk – is this where they turn their season around?
22. (23/+1) - Saskatchewan Beavers - (2-4)
Their win against the Revolution shows what’s on paper maybe for real.
Better Luck Next Season
23. (18/-5) - Revelstoke Revolution - (2-4)
-This team needs to a way to find those last 5+ points; that’s how close their losses and wins are.
24. (19/-5) - Winnipeg Warriors - (2-4)
-Another frustrating team to watch. In a different world, they could have been 5-1 already; they need to figure out where to get those extra points from.
25. (22/-3) - Quebec Boreal - (2-4)
-Predictably, they keep on sliding down hill as the better teams have a turn at them.
26. (26/-) - In San Jose Pimpin Aint Easy - (1-5)
-A loss against the Beavers next week means, for sure, they should start looking for next season.
27. (27/0) - Toronto Smoke - (0-6)
-Nice fight against the Cold Lake Wolverines there.
28. (31/+3) - Bloodweiser Bugle All Stars - (0-6)
Is a spot above the bottom 4 really a step ahead?
The D-League – Anyone making bets on which one of these will be sold first?
29. (28/-1) - Kelowna Outlaws - (0-6)
30. (30/-) - Castlegar Crusaders - (0-6)
31. (31/-) - Barkmere Bulldawgs - (0-56)
32. (32/-) - Peterborough Preachers - (0-6)
