AUGUST 19TH UPDATE:
Eastern Europe A #1 - Alpha Conference Power Rankings - 8/19/08
1. Vladivostok Kraken – Last Week: 1
Record (9-0-0)
»The #1 team in the Alpha Conference is still Vladivostok, no two ways about it. Their week 6 win over the Warlocks allowed them to have a sigh of relief, as they played significantly lesser teams the following 3 weeks, and are now sitting at 9-0. HBs Juice Peterson and All day Everyday have both eclipsed the 1,000 yard mark for the season, and CJ McLawSchool’s 12:1 TD:Int ratio is the best in the league. The 7-2 Conquerors are next for the Kraken, and a win will all but clinch the #1 seed in the playoffs for Vladivostok.
2. Moscow Iron Curtain – Last Week: 2
Record (8-1-0)
» Moscow is riding the second longest win streak in the Alpha Conference… simply because they lost to #1 Vladivostok in Week 1. Since then, they have beaten the likes of the Conquerors and Screamin Eagles in their last couple of games, and have really proven they can give the Kraken a shot for the title. After their next 3 games against the Sea Wasps, Hammers and Warlocks, the Iron Curtain can put it on cruise control and roll through their final 4 games and have some great momentum going into the playoffs.
3. Warsaw Warlocks – Last Week: 7
Record (7-2-0)
» The love rectangle that is the 4 7-2 teams in the Alpha Conference I believe is headed by the Warlocks. Their only 2 losses were by a combined total of 14 points (to the Conquerors and Kraken). Their toughest part of their schedule is ahead, with only 2 teams under .500 (1 is their interleague game) and will need to rack up a lot of wins to keep themselves in the #3 spot in the Alpha Conference. With 2 20-TD, 1,200+ yard running backs in their arsenal, Warsaw has a good shot of doing just that.
4. Split Bananas – Last Week: 3
Record (7-2-0)
» The Split Bananas sure know how to do one thing – win games. Their last 2 games have been wins, and by a combined total of 4 points against the Sea Wasps and Hammers. They have one of the leagues leading tacklers in Heinz “Sturm” Ketchup, however I’m not really sold on their offensive abilities, just their willingness to win games, and that’s what it takes to be a great team.
5. Alexandrovsk Conquerors – Last Week: 4
Record (7-2-0)
» While everyone else in the league is pounding the ball with the run game, the Conquerors continue to air it out behind Wing N Darts and Cashn Dabank, both in the top 3 in yards and TDs in their respective categories. Low and behold – they play the Kraken this week, and have boosted in hopes of trying to compete and maybe even win! A loss to the Iron Curtain and a win against the Screamin Eagles last week has Alexandrovsk sitting at #5 until otherwise stated, and may remain here until the playoffs.
6. Stockholm Screamin Eagles – Last Week: 5
Record (6-3-0)
» Although their record is 1 game behind that of the Sea Wasps, the quality of their opponents and their team overall is still better. In 2 games our #6 and #7 square off, and Stockholm should be able to pull out a victory. Even though they are currently on a 2-game losing streak, the Screamin Eagles have a favorable schedule the rest of the season (except that nasty interleague game against the Revs). Their big offensive line should play a factor in most of their remaining games, and will most likely end up with an away game in the first round of the playoffs.
7. Tyrrhenian Sea Wasps – Last Week: 6
Record (7-2-0)
» A tale of 2 half seasons for the Sea Wasps. Their remaining schedule is FULL of tough teams. Their 7-2 schedule may not hold up against their final opponents, but will definitely be taken into consideration. Their playoff chances at the moment are looking great, but could be knocked off by any combination of the Hammers, Detectives or even the Roughnecks. For now, #7.
8. Carpathain Roughnecks – Last Week: 11
Record (3-6-0)
» Yeah, I am crazy. A 3-6 team in the top 8 of my power rankings. The Roughnecks are 2-2 in their last 4, including 2 wins against the 2 teams directly below them, and losses to the Sea Wasps and Warlocks. Two of their remaining games are against top teams in each conference; however the other 5 are very, very winnable. The Roughnecks could end up with a 9-7 record and end up clinching the #8 seed due to head-to-head wins against the Hammers and Detectives. This is my team to watch for in the coming weeks.
9. Donetsk Hammers – Last Week: 8
Record (5-4-0)
10. Misc Detectives – Last Week: 9
Record (5-4-0)
11. Istanbul Raging Bulls – Last Week: 10
Record (2-7-0)
12. Warsaw Bulldogs – Last Week: 13
Record (2-7-0)
13. Ufa Capitalists – Last Week: 12
Record (2-7-0)
14. Gotham Knights – Last Week: 15
Record (2-7-0)
15. Kiev Knights – Last Week: 14
Record (0-9-0)
16. Siberian Express – Last Week: 16
Record (0-9-0)
