The Blica Bulletin – Issue 17 – "Blica are crowned victors against tough Royals”
Written By Herouk87
St Michael - Whilst the playoffs are under way for the Western Europe AA #3 teams the fun doesn’t stop for the unlucky few that didn’t quite make it. Anyone that saw the 3-13 London Royals take on the 4-12 St Michael Blica at the Royal Stadium certainly got their money’s worth as the game went right down to the last play in regulation.
It must be said that London had a strange season, being shut out 6 times whilst shutting out 2 opponents, the term we are looking for here is consistently inconsistent. The game started in earnest with London 3-0 up after a FG by Bubba Bradley, after this the game really started to spice up. Eric MartinsQB; who went the whole game without an INT for the first time since the turn of the millennium it seems, hit Dont Hate Me for the first lead of the game. This lead would not last however as Brad Reese hit Gnarls "Bitch" Barkley for a 57 yard catch and run before the Blica’s realised what had hit them.
St Michael hit back once again with MartinsQB hitting James Braddock for the go ahead score. Not to be outdone the Royals hit back again with a second Bradley FG to make the score 14-13 to St Michael. The scoring was not done there however as Barkley scored his second TD before Gazoo Gramatica made the score at the half 20-16 to London.
The first real mistake of the second half came when Chris Smith!! picked off Reese. Unfortunately St Michael couldn’t make anything of this opportunity and had to punt the ball away. As the game edged towards the final quarter it was delicately poised before the kickers took over.
In the fourth it was Bradley and Gramatica hitting FG’s before the turning point of the match. Reese was trying to build on his teams lead when a pass intended for Jack Tripper went through the receiver’s hands and into St Michael CB Brandon O'neil. This gave the St Michael offense great field position and renewed vigour. St Michael achieved what they had been failing to do all year and that was come out on top in a clutch situation. Bary Sanders rushing for the TD lead by the formidable George N Window who finished the game with 4 pancakes, no doubt a day to remember for the big guy.
London tried to hit back with a TD of their own but with the Blica defence now covering Barkley like spots on a teenager the Royals had to settle for three. St Michael then took the lead once again after three consecutive hook ups from MartinsQB to Dont Hate Me led to a Gramatica FG from 44 yards. London only had 30 seconds to respond but the clock was too great an enemy as they ran out of time meaning the Blicas took home the W this time with a 29-26 victory.
The game ball goes to MartinsQB who managed the game well for St Michael as well as O’neil who got the timely INT to set up the go ahead score. For London Brad Reese and Gnarls "Bitch" Barkley both deserve to be on the winning side but alas today was not their day in the sun, but if they continue to play like that we can expect to see great things for the two of them. With confidence flowing through their veins St Michael travel back to Mile High Blica to face off against the 5-11 who will be boosted by their victory over the Glasgow Manglers. The teams met in week 16 last year with Barca taking the spoils in an easy 31-6 victory, the Blica Heads expect a better performance this time round from their heroes.
With this victory we can see that St Michael is trying to iron out the creases in their game. They finally were able to rush the ball for 91 yards as well as only turning the ball over once. Ironically whilst the offense got their act together, it was the Blica defence that seemed to capitulate under the pressure free conditions. It seems that when both sides of the ball can get their act together, the Blica’s are a formidable side who can cause problems to 90% of the teams out there. However for the majority of the time they seem to share something with their English counterparts, consistently inconsistent.
