No, that's a good question.

The magic number can be reached though any combination of wins by your team OR losses by the team you need to finish ahead of.

Take the Lincoln Lucky, for example. They're 2-4 with a magic number of 4. In order to finish in 8th place, Lincoln needs to finish ahead of Antioch, whose record is 3-3. (I'm ignoring Niagara to simplify the example.)

There are 2 games remaining.

Lincoln wins their final 2 games. Magic number drops from 4 to 2, and Lincoln's record is 4-4.

Antioch loses their final 2 games. Magic number drops from 2 to 0, and Antioch's record is 3-5.

Lincoln takes 8th place. But to do it, they needed a combination of 2 wins by Lincoln AND 2 losses by Antioch. 2 + 2 = 4. Hence, why their magic number is 4, and why they're not eliminated. As long as your magic number is at or below TWICE the number of games remaining, you can still clinch a playoff spot outright by finishing ahead of the other team in the standings.





So why aren't teams with a magic number of 5 eliminated yet either? Well, such a team can't finish AHEAD of the current #8 team in the standings... but they can still finish TIED with the current #8 team in the standings. Then the tie-breaker rules apply, and the team with the magic number of 5 can still sneak in that way.

What refs? There are no penalties remember? :-P

Someone has to put up their arms to signal a touchdown or mark off first downs... if they are fanning their noses cause of strom there is going to be alot of incomplete passes, missed field goals, and no touchdowns...
