The Blica Bulletin – Issue 14 – “Blica’s season in tatters after mauling from Lyon”
Written by Herouk87
St Michael – The St Michael Blicas cut forlorn figures as they left the LFU Stadium today knowing that everything they had worked so hard for this season is now unachievable. Today’s loss now leaves the team labelled recently as “Everyone's favourite underdogs” with a 4-10 record, three games behind Lyon, Antwerp and Berlin with only two games remaining in the season. Their main objective now will be solidifying their 11th place in order to build a solid foundation for next year.
The game started in a tense manner with both teams well aware of what was at stake for them. St Michael needed to keep their season alive whilst Lyon couldn’t afford to lose any ground on pack this late in the season. The nerves clearly got the better of Baller T as he fumbled trying to return the first punt of the game for the Blicas. Ré-anu Renaud recovered the ball at the Blica 34 and from there the Loups struck. It was Gandalf leBlanc who threw the first TD of his career which set Lyon on their way. Although it must be said that he has Monta leLoup to thank for making a fantastic catch after the ball was tipped by DE Thomas Bucknasty. This good fortunate seems to have characterized St Michael’s season as they can’t seem to catch a break no matter the circumstance.
St Michael continued to struggle to find their stride as they quickly went three and out before a mousachi leLoup FG on the next drive made the score 10-0 to Lyon with only 10 minutes played. It could have been worse for the Blicas at the beginning of the second when Dillon McKay fumbled the ball, but luckily for him Keith Fischer was at hand to dive on the lose rock. The occasion was still getting the better of the players it seemed as both leLoup and Gazoo Gramatica, who was labelled “Automatica” last week, missed FG attempts. Gramatica’s attempt coming after Achilles Veron recovered a fumble from sena leLoup on the punt return.
Gramatica made amends at the start of the third quarter; putting St Michael on the scoreboard from 25 yards and finally giving the travelling “Blica Heads” something to cheer. Then St Michael made a play that looked to stir the game into action. leBlanc was intercepted by Brandon O’neil to give the Blicas great field position and the chance to tie the game up. But if we have learnt anything this season it is that nothing is ever as easy as it seems with the Blicas. As St Michael aimed for that killer blow, the Loups struck back. A pass intended for Dont Hate Me was overthrown to the waiting Ikkyuu Naga and eased the pressure on Lyon. But St Michael refused to lie down and regained the initiative through the tireless work of Three Linebacker. Firstly he sacked leBlanc and two plays later he picked off John Fitzgerald Kennedy to cap an incredible series for the young LB. Alas the Loups were to strike back again on a Orin leLoup interception before they settled for a FG despite fumbling the ball again. A frantic third quarter ended 13-3 in favour of the Frenchmen. Now game the business end of the match and possibly season for both teams.
After Leloup added his third FG of the game 1 minute into the final quarter the game was set up for an epic finish. St Michael knew they had to bring it or go home. Suddenly MartinsQB was able to string together 5 consecutive completions to put the Blicas in position to score. Could they finally beat the Lyon defence for the 6 points they so desperately craved? The answer was an emphatic yes as Martins QB hit James Braddock from 14 yards to put the score at a tantalising 16-10. Only one score separated the teams as players began to tire and wills began to break.
The sign of a good team is one that can win when a) they aren’t playing at their best and b) when they most need it. The later was most certainly applied as on the very next drive it was Lyon who hit back to finally kill of the game and end St Michael’s season. The final nail in the coffin coming when Kennedy hit Monta leLoup for the score. It seemed that the Blicas exerted all of their energies on the previous drive and were unable to hit back, succumbing in the end 23-10.
The player of the game must be Monta leLoup whose 2TD were the real difference maker in the contest. Both Brandon O’neil and Three Linebacker get special mentions but fell short in their team’s loss. Xblica must now pick his team up from the doldrums if they are to stand any chance against München The Fearless Lions, whose record stands at 9-5 behind the running of Darren McFadden. With nothing to play for but their pride, expect a spirit affair at the Mile High Blica.
