The Home Stretch
Thank you for purchasing your copy of The Capital Times – No real news here, just a sports section. And a suspect one at that…
Pro League 1 – Alpha Conference
We’ve reached the 3-quarter mark of the season and the final standings are beginning to take shape. Unlike previous issues which focused on prior games, this issue of The Capital Times will instead focus on where we anticipate teams will end their seasons. Who will compete for the Lomborti Trophy? Who will be doomed to ignominious relegation? Let’s jump right in and start pissing people off!
1 (3) - Florida Frenzy – 8-4
Florida had a bumpy start to their season, and at the halfway mark had a rather misleading record of 4-and-4. Since that point however, they’ve been on a tear, rattling off victories in each of their next 4 games to arrive at this point of the season at 8-and-4 – good enough to bump them up 2 spots and land them atop the Alpha Conference.
One could dismiss this current 4-game streak by saying the Frenzy has faced lesser teams during that stretch, but we believe this squad is finally firing on all cylinders and is peaking at the right time. Their Week 13 matchup against a strong C-Town team will be a real litmus test, but we expect the Frenzy will come out on top, and continue their current streak to the end of the season.
Capital Times prediction for Florida: 12-4 – 1st place in Alpha Conference
2 (1) - C-Town MF’n Hood – 7-5
C-Town finished the first half of their season atop the Alpha Conference at 5-and-3. Splitting their next 4 games dropped them down a peg, into 2nd place. The MF’ers will wrap up their season by first hosting the 1st-place Florida Frenzy in Week 13 – a game that promises to be one for the ages. In the first matchup between these two teams in Week 2, C-Town defeated the Frenzy. But we believe Florida is on a mission, having won their last 4. We give the nod to Florida in Week 13.
Fortunately for the MF’ers, their final 3 games of the season are against teams they should have no trouble defeating.
Capital Times prediction for C-Town: 10-6 – 2nd place in Alpha Conference
4 (2) - SWAT Team – 6-6
SWAT arrived at the halfway point of the season with an even 4-and-4 record, good enough to position them in 2nd place in the conference. They would continue to divide their games between the ‘win’ and ‘loss’ columns, arriving at this point with an equally split record of 6-and-6, dropping them down a couple positions into 4th.
SWAT faces the Sea Wasps in Week 13, a rematch of their Week 2 contest which SWAT dropped by a score of 10-23. The Wasps are riding a 2-game winning streak and we think they’ll carry this momentum into Week 13 to defeat SWAT. But we believe that’s where SWAT turns things around, closing their season with 3 straight wins to finish the regular season strong.
Capital Times prediction for SWAT: 9-7 – 3rd place in Alpha Conference
3 (5) - Tyrrhenian Sea Wasps – 6-6
The Wasps finished their first half of the season with an equal 4-and-4 record, landing them in 5th place to end the first half. They’ve had a good season since then, splitting their next 4 games to bring them to 6-and-6 – good enough to bump them up two spots into 3rd place in the conference.
Riding a 2-game winning streak, the team will be brimming with confidence, but the Wasps have a rough schedule ahead, and will face off against 3 of the league favorites before ending their season with a road game out in Nebraska – a game they should win.
Capital Times prediction for Sea Wasps: 7-9 – 4th place in Alpha Conference
5 (4) - High Plains Mustangs – 5-7
Arriving at the midway point of the season with an even 4-and-4 record, things have not gone as well for the Mustangs as they might have hoped since then. The team would lose 3-of-its-next 4 games, finishing their first 12 games at 5-and-7, and dropping them into 5th in the conference.
Week 13 sees the Mustangs traveling to Nebraska to face the Blackshirts, a team they narrowly beat back in Week 2, but also a team that has struggled this season. We give the Mustangs the nod in their Week 13 matchup. Sadly for High Plains, we expect that will be as good as it gets, as their schedule to end the season sees them facing 3 consecutive powerhouses in Florida, SWAT and C-Town.
Capital Times prediction for High Plains: 6-10 – 5th place in Alpha Conference
6 (6) - Nebraska Blackshirts – 2-10
There’s no denying the Blackshirts have struggled this season. At the halfway point, they’d earned an underwhelming 1-and-7 record. They surprised many in Week 9, upsetting the Athens Empire, but followed that up with another 3 straight losses to arrive at this point of the season at 2-and-10. That won’t be good enough, sadly, and it will take an unheralded 4-game win streak to (possibly) avoid last place and relegation. A quick glance at their remaining schedule suggests this is unlikely to happen however, and we believe this squad will fade down the home stretch. Perhaps a rebuild wouldn’t be such a bad thing?
Capital Times prediction for the Blackshirts: 2-14 – 6th place in Alpha Conference
Pro League 1 – Beta Conference
1 (1) - WAR MACHINE – 10-2
WAR MACHINE have had themselves quite a season, arriving at the midway point of the current campaign atop the Beta Conference with a 7-and-1 record. They’ve continued to impress, winning 3 of their next 4 to remain atop the conference at 10-and-2.
Of their remaining 4 games, the only squad that could potentially upset the MACHINE in our view would be the Alamo City Spurs – a team that defeated WAR back in Week 2, and who they face again in Week 13. During the intervening 11 weeks, we believe WAR has plugged any earlier holes in their scheme and should have no trouble riding their current 3-game winning streak until the end.
Capital Times prediction for WAR MACHINE: 14-2 – 1st place in Beta Conference
2 (2) - Alamo City Spurs – 9-3
The Spurs have also been a contender throughout Season 109. They finished the first half of their season with an impressive 6-and-2 record, and have since added another 3 wins to their total, arriving at this point of the season at 9-and-3. Looking ahead, we believe the Spurs are good for at least 2 more wins, and most probably 3, with the Asau Golden Eagles being a possible upset. But for now, we’ll give the Spurs the benefit of the doubt.
Capital Times prediction for the Spurs: 12-4 – 2nd place in Beta Conference
3 (3) - Cherokee Nation – 7-5
Finishing the first half of their season at 5-and-3, the Nation split their next 4 games and now sit at 7-and-5 – still good enough to keep them ensconced at #3 in the standings. Looking ahead, the Nation faces some tough competition but victory will never be completely out-of-reach. We predict Cherokee will split their remaining games down the stretch, losing to WAR and Athens but defeating both Asau and Odessa.
Capital Times prediction for Cherokee Nation: 9-7 – 3rd place in Beta Conference
4 (4) - Asau Golden Eagles – 6-6
The Eagles finished the first half of their season even at 4-and-4, and split their next 4 games to remain even at 6-and-6 – good enough to keep them in 4th in the conference. A quick look at their schedule shows they finish the season with some tough assignments. Of their 4 remaining games, we expect the Eagles will struggle against some very good squads, taking just 2 out of their remaining 4 games when they first face the Athens Empire, before moving on to play a very beatable Odessa squad. It could be rough sledding for the Eagles in their other 2 remaining games however, so we expect the Eagles to stay true-to-form and split their games evenly.
Capital Times prediction for the Eagles: 8-8 – 4th place in Beta Conference
5 (5) - Athens Empire – 4-8
Athens had a rough start to their season, but bounced back to finish the first half with a 3-and-5 record. Unfortunately, they team would only take one of their next 4 games and arrive at this point in the season with an uninspiring 4-and-8 record – placing them at 5th in the conference. A look at their remaining schedule should be cause for alarm over in Athens however, as the Empire will face 4 difficult opponents down the stretch. They may pull one out of the fire, but at this point, we feel it's unlikely, and expect the Empire to struggle to season’s end.
Capital Times prediction for the Empire: 4-12 – 5th place in Beta Conference
6 (6) - Odessa Mojo – 2-10
The Mojo might be the best news for Athens at the moment, as the squad from Odessa is in even more danger of relegation than the Empire. The Mojo ended their first half of the season in last place in the conference, where they currently remain after 12 weeks. Looking at their remaining schedule won’t inspire much hope among Mojo fans as the team will face some very tough opponents down the stretch. It’s possible they could surprise to stave off relegation, but we wouldn’t advise putting money on it.
Capital Times prediction for the Mojo: 2-14 – 6th place in Beta Conference

Following a season-and-a-half of learning (re-learning?) the GLB ropes, the Capital Ravens - https://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/team.pl?team_id=10803 - will be rebooting and reloading at the end of the current campaign, dropping back down to the Rookie leagues for a more purposeful and planned-out run up the ladder to eventually, we hope, compete at the game’s highest levels. Agents who are interested in being part of this extraordinary franchise (we have punch and pie!) are invited to PM yours truly, Ravenwood - https://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/home.pl?user_id=160082 - to indicate interest. We still have plenty of spots in our new roster to fill, so don’t be shy – come be a Raven!
Pro League 2 – Alpha Conference
1 (1) - Jersey Showboats – 9-3
Jersey finished the first half of their season at an impressive 7-and-1, sitting comfortably atop their Alpha Conference. Although they would split their next 4 games, their resulting 9-and-3 record would still be good enough to keep them atop the conference. Looking ahead, the Showboats should have no trouble wrapping up their 4 remaining contests to remain atop the standings.
Capital Times prediction for the Showboats: 13-3 – 1st place in Alpha Conference
2 (2) - Tempe Venom – 8-4
Tempe arrived at the midway point of the season with an impressive 6-and-2 record. As the season progressed, they would split their next 4 games and now sit at 8-and-4 – still good enough to keep the Venom ensconced in 2nd place in their conference. A glance at their remaining schedule shows them playing 4 squads that are all chasing them in the standings, and we see no reason to expect any upsets at this point.
Capital Times prediction for the Venom: 12-4 – 2nd place in Alpha Conference
3 (3) - Miami Red Hawks – 7-5
Miami closed the first half of their season with a very respectable 5-and-3 record. Like many teams in their conference they would go on to split their next 4 games, and now sit at 7-and-5 – still good enough to keep them in 3rd place.
Their remaining schedule has them playing two teams they should be able to beat, in Cochabamba and LetMeShe, but the other two will be tough. We give the Hawks the nod in two of their remaining four games.
Capital Times prediction for the Red Hawks: 9-7 – 3rd place in Alpha Conference
4 (5) - Cochabamba Coyotes – 6-6
At the halfway point of the season, the Coyotes had a rather uninspiring 3-and-5 record, good enough for 5th in the Alpha Conference. Since that point though, the team has impressed, rattling off victories in 3 of their next 4 games to arrive at this point in the season with an even 6-and-6 record – good enough to bump them up a spot into 4th in the standings. Looking ahead though, the Coyotes face an uphill climb, squaring off against 3 of the conference’s powerhouse teams in their remaining 4 games. If they can come away with more than 1 win down the stretch, they’ll have done well indeed.
Capital Times prediction for Cochabamba: 7-9 – 4th place in Alpha Conference
5 (4) - Midnight Marauders – 5-7
Finishing the first half of their season at 4-and-4, the Marauders sat in 4th place. They’ve struggled since then however, dropping 3 of their next 4 games (admittedly to some very tough opponents). Their remaining schedule doesn’t look much easier, unfortunately, and sees them facing off against 3 teams they’re currently chasing in the standings. We hope we’re wrong, but we can only give them the nod to win 1 of their remaining 4.
Capital Times prediction for the Marauders: 6-10 – 5th place in Alpha Conference
6 (6) - LetMeShe/Them TD’s – 1-11
Sigh…what can you say about these loveable TD’s that hasn’t already been said? At 1-and-11, it’s a mathematical certainty they’ll finish the season DFL, and are thus doomed to relegation (assuming they’re not planning a complete reboot of the squad). About the only thing we can say for them at this point is they’ll help pad the win columns for the 4 teams who are lucky enough to be playing them down the home stretch.
Capital Times prediction for the TD’s: 1-15 – 6th place in Alpha Conference
Pro League 2 – Beta Conference
1 (1) - Orlando Prime Timers – 10-2
Orlando finished the first half of the season with a stellar 7-and-1 record, and the reigning champs haven’t taken their foot off the accelerator, wining 3 of their next 4 games to remain comfortably atop the Beta Conference with a 10-and-2 record. Looking ahead to their remaining schedule, they should be able to beat their remaining 4 opponents. However, we’ve not predicted any surprise upsets so far in this issue, and well, that’s just boring. We give the nod to the champs in 3 of their remaining 4 contests, but we boldly predict the Wife Carriers will carry the day when Honolulu hosts the Prime Timers in Week 14 at Squad Stadium. Even if the Wife Carriers can best the champs though, Orlando we’re still calling for the champs to finish the regular season atop the standings.
Capital Times prediction for the champs: 13-3 – 1st place in Beta Conference
2 (2) - Honolulu Hurricane Wife Carriers – 9-3
The Wife Carriers finished the first half of their season in 2nd place, and we expect they’ll hold onto that spot down the stretch. Finishing the first half at 6-and-2, the Carriers won 3 of their next 4 games and now sit at an impressive 9-and-3. Looking ahead, we expect they’ll win out their remaining 4 games (including an upset of the remaining champs in Week 14), but for one exception – we are going to go out on a limb and predict the Wife Carriers will drop their Week 13 game to the surging KC Comets – a team that came within a field goal of defeating the Honolulu squad back in Week 2, and which has only gotten better since then. But their resulting 12-and-4 record, we predict, will still see Honolulu finishing in 2nd place.
Capital Times prediction for the Wife Carriers: 12-4 – 2nd place in Beta Conference
3 (3) - KC Comets – 7-5
Controversy swirled around this franchise as we entered the current season. The roster was expected to be nothing short of revolutionary, boasting, as they did, the highest skill point values of any team in the history of Goal Line Blitz. (If you don’t believe me, just ask them!) The team came out less-than-advertised however in its first 8 games, splitting their record at 4-and-4. Since then though, they’ve delivered, and are now living up to all the hype, winning 3 of their next 4 games, including 2 matches against RC teams Orlando and Jersey – impressive indeed.
Looking ahead, we can easily see the Comets running their remaining table of games to finish their reboot season sitting pretty in 3rd place.
Capital Times prediction for the Comets: 11-5 – 3rd place in Beta Conference
4 (4) - Johannesburg Jackals – 7-5
At the halfway mark, the Jackals sat in 4th in the Beta Conference with a 3-and-5 record. They would rattle off 4 consecutive wins in their next 4 games though (including a thrilling razor-thin victory over a very strong squad from Tempe) to arrive at their current 7-and-5 record – good enough to keep them in 4th place in a tough, competitive conference.
Looking ahead to their remaining schedule, the Jackals face some very tough competition. As impressive as their Week 9 victory over the Venom was, we anticipate the Jackals will struggle down the stretch to finish 8-and-8 – still good enough for 4th in the Beta Conference.
Capital Times prediction for the Jackals: 8-8 – 4th place in Beta Conference
5 (6) - London Exiles – 2-10
These sharp-dressed Exiles have not had their greatest season. Finishing the first half of the campaign at 1-and-7, the team from across the Pond did add another notch to their win column when they surprised the Cochabamba Coyotes in Week 10. Alas, it’s been a struggle since then.
Looking ahead, the Exiles ought to be able to notch another victory in Week 13 when they face the Snoqualmie Wildcats, but we predict the fun ends there, and wouldn’t be surprised to see the team drop its last 3 games. If our predictions hold true, the Exiles will have avoided relegation, but only just.
Capital Times prediction for the sharp-dressed Exiles: 3-13 – 5th place in Beta Conference
6 (5) - Snoqualmie Wildcats – 1-11
Snoqualmie is, er, not having their best season. We were warned early on by the ‘Cats that the squad would not be competitive this season, and they’ve certainly delivered. At 1-and-11, they’re sitting DFL, and it’s really a toss-up as to which Beta cellar-dweller will get relegated. We’re going to predict the Sno-cats, if only for the reason that a 10-game losing streak is a difficult monkey to get off your back.
Capital Times prediction for the Sno-cats: 1-15 – 6th place in Beta Conference

Capital Times prediction for WAR MACHINE: 14-2 – 1st place in Beta Conference

Since that point though, the team has impressed, rattling off victories in 3 of their next 4 games to arrive at this point in the season with an even 6-and-6 record – good enough to bump them up a spot into 4th in the standings. Their remaining schedule doesn’t look much easier, unfortunately, and sees them facing off against 3 teams they’re currently chasing in the standings.
