What makes it real tough to build a right proper Possession type receiver is this;
They need at least 135 speed. Anything less I have found to cause separation (from defenders to make catch attempt) too much an issue.
To compensate for the lack of speed you need many other things to help such as;
Catching (duh). Since most catches will be of the contested variety you should have a minimum of 95. Sound low to you? I'm'a disagree'n. Like many skills there comes a point where your just being silly with how high you go. For catching, 90 and above usually churns out pretty similar stats (all other things being equal). I mean in my stat keeping 100 catching raises the % by about 1 over a 90 catching skill. And with Bort's famous diminishing returns strategy of building this game, I suspect getting catching to 110.. 120.. 130... doesn't equal another 1% gain per 10 levels higher. Especially when that higher catching comes at the expense of other very important skills you need.
Jumping. I found building max height combined with a minimum of 60 jumping works pretty good. WR (and TE's) can be set decently taller than DB's and that height difference means you can shave a bit off your jumping skill. Generally... below 50 isn't worth beans. Below 60 I don't trust. But 60-80 works fine. TE's can be made even taller so you can get by with even less.
Agility. Combined with some SA's and VA's you need enough to make sharp cuts. Not because you'll be cutting sharper than your defenders but because if you don't then they'll just smother you like a blanket. Since DB's have plenty of Agility and other skills of this ilk then you need them too.
Strength. I saw the mention of "carrying" (will get to that next) but not of Strength. I dunno about anyone else but having 65+ carrying but only 10 strength is utter crap for avoiding KL's. Same in reverse. They work together so having one without the other is just a waste of time (IMHO).
Carrying. See above. I tend to like my Carrying higher than my Strength but I want both to be at LEAST 50 if at all possible. If not... 70 carrying with 40+ strength will usually do ok.
Stamina. Unlike Speed based builds that can break off 70+ yarders if things go right, possession styles generally are a catch and drop type of build... so they don't need the same high stamina of those type builds. If you wanna build one that breaks tackles like a PHB then build a TE. WR's don't get enough WEIGHT to be bruisers. You can spend a LOT of SP's building as BT type Poss WR but he'll NEVER be anything close to a PHB on the loose. Hell... give a PHB some catching and hit him on screens and watch the bodies fly. TE's, at least, can pack on some BEEF and be effective. I am sure others will disagree but I think that the amount of SP's it takes to build a BT style Poss WR kills the player's ability to be a highly effective receiver. I'd rather him catch the damn ball first than make the highly 'occasional' highlight reel BF fest.
To me, Speed receivers are the highlight reel field stretchers and game breakers (as far as the passing game goes)... while Possession types are the guys you should be able to count on for decent 5-10 yard gains. Meat and potatoes. Nothing flashy. Trying to build them like they're some super star player, to me anyways, is silly and a waste of time. They're necessary... or I swear every speed WR would be triple covered. But if I get a 65% completion (or better) for a possession receiver but only 7.5 yards per catch?... I'm french kissing my dog.

A Possession WR has to beat the DB's "go first roll"

Nice to see a classic TL;DR Theo post!

The possession WR that led all WRs in receiving around S90ish when MM was in WL, was drastically slower than that.
And I mean, DRASTICALLY.

You don't want them to separate like TJ pointed out, you want them to just come down with the ball. And winning the go first roll, yeah catching is a sizeable chunk. It's not about the possWR's stats in a vacuum ... it's going up against the DBs stats as well. I guarantee you, the difference between 95 and 135 catching is a HUGE number of interceptions, by losing that all important "go first roll".

Also, fwiw... The receiver is only half the equation.

You need a QB with maxed Pocket Presence SA, and fairly high Confidence to keep the pressure accuracy/quality penalty to a minimum.

Plus an O-line that can handle a pass rush won't hurt either.

I wouldn't suggest having a full team of these. Think of it more like a Slider to complement a Fastball.

Agreed. I like to keep Speed around/above 125 but you don't need the 150+ the speed guys go for. I always shoot for a 135 end but I don't always get it.

The slight speed drop enables a lot of separation from the defender that is accelerating much more. Trick of course is taking advantage of the gap that opens up.

That's on the OC and timing the progressions of the QB to the receivers at the proper time. While on the subject... this issue (timing progressions) is why most OC's hate Quick Read. It speeds up the timing. If you take the time, it can be a decent SA. Trouble is most won't take the time so your QB (with QR) is despised by teams with OC's that hate QR.
