Its been a while since I've played the game and can't remember is there a period where your dots can leave a team if the owner goes inactive?

This does not exist anymore, you will have to send a Support request in and they will release you.

I had players on this team last season, with an owner who has been inactive since Dec 28th, and never had any chance to release my dots without asking Support.

Don't procrastinate on the Support ticket either... send it today. I don't know if Support has gotten any faster since the Dotpocalypse, but I've learned not to wait. If you even *think* you *might* need to open a Support ticket soon but you're not sure, just open the ticket. You can just cancel it later if you don't need it after all.
