GOOD or SUCKY?
Forum > FAQ's, Player Guides and Newbie Help > POCKET DEFENDER
If you're a Passing team with Pass blocking O-linemen and that's your primary mode of offense... very good to have. If you're a run team that passes then I'd prefer 'Pass Blocker' over it because you don't have to have O-linemen set the blocking focus to 'Pass Block' to get the (max) benefit. Or... if you know a way to be 100% sure that the pass blocking O-lineman is ONLY in on passing downs (I never figured out a way to make that happen) then, yeah... have pass blocking arch's set for Pass Block and get Pocket Defender. Personally I just get Pass Blocker since I normally only build Run Block O-linemen.

It helps a pass first team. I use both pass blocker & this one in my O-Line (instead of power blocker, I use No focus blocking focus anyway).

This is what I am looking at:
Pass Block Oline
General Setup: 15 Overpower, 15 Pocket Defender, 15 Max Protect, 15 Pass Blocker, 12 Great Blocker, 1 OT Killer
Other solid alternatives: Outside Blocker (OG), Pulling Lineman (OG), Special Teamer, Work Out Warrior, GL Blocker, possibly Stonewall
Mediocre alternatives: Heart of a Champion, Hometown Hero, Quick, DF Blocker, Red Zone Freak
Run Block Oline
General Setup: 15 Overpower, 15 Pocket Defender, 15 Power Blocker, 15 Pass Blocker, 12 Great Blocker, 1 OT Killer
Other solid alternatives: Outside Blocker (OG), Pulling Lineman (OG), Special Teamer, Work Out Warrior, GL Blocker, possibly Stonewall
Mediocre alternatives: Heart of a Champion, Hometown Hero, Quick, DF Blocker, Red Zone Freak
I should clarify that I use the method of Power Blocker + Pocket Defender and use No Blocking Focus tactic. You may easily work with either one all by itself in order to gear yourself toward being a more complete Passing or Running team only.

The bottom bolded part is not mine but I am trying to see if I can get a well rounded O-Line.

You get 72 VPs, what else are you spending then on?
Are you set to 'no focus' ?
Are the hurries and sacks you're taking cause by blocking issues, or are they well designed blitz's?
I don't think 'sucky' is the right word. You just have to decide if it actually applies to the dot in question. If it applies, then it's good. If it doesn't apply, then find something else that does.
Edit, just saw the new post.
Spending 30 VPs to get an additional 15% hold block is probably a good deal IMO.

I get what TJ is saying (last line in post) but I'll always counter with "vs what else?" A setting of 'No Focus' gets you 1% per level of 'Pocket Defender' VA. 1% is the lowest bonus for any VA (several have them). So, if there are NO better bonuses available... then, yeah... go for it (IMHO). Understand, to get Pocket Defender you are then NOT getting something else.
This type of VA question comes up quite often and, while I don't consider my opinion to be "THE" opinion, it is based off simple math, common knowledge, and decades of this crazy game (meaning I've had time to screw up a LOT of builds and learn from it ). That said, for me it's all about 'the bang for the buck'. A 5% AEQ piece is always preferred over a 3% piece... so why isn't a 5% VA not considered more valuable than a 3% VA (or a 1%)? Some VA's are extremely limited... they only work in given situations or require certain factors to be present before they 'might' fire. I prefer those that don't require 'firing' to work... or aren't limited by factors... over those VA's that do. I also prefer the higher % over the lower ones. And there's always the skill bonus that adds good things to your dots.
Just saying, look about before pulling a trigger on a VA and see if you can do better. If not, then go for it. If so... then some thinkin is gonna be required.

Fwiw, last season the team that led WL in rushing (total and average), and passing (total and average) used....
All centers and guards on run focus.
3/4 OT's on pass focus with pocket defender. Remaining OT was on run focus because of VA reset limitations.
So my personal feelings is it's worth on OT's

In the end, isn't that the thing that matters most?

It turns out that the most important VA of all was the friends we made along the way.
