Reading Agerm73's posts always get me pumped to make content so we're double dipping with another build of the week. Today I have for newcomers what I consider to be the "prototypical" non-super QB.
A quick disclaimer is of course, that these are just my opinions and while I've found success building my way that it may not be for everyone and others may find just as much success or more doing it their own way instead. But for those looking for a starting point, this is it.
Criticisms of the build and alternatives are welcome below!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sell
So with that out of the way - let's look at the final build we'll be diving into today. A slightly tuned version of the QB used by the Rhode Island Falcons, Abe Heller.
So let's talk about the star of the post:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654109918.png
Quarterbacks, more than most positions in GLB2 have a bunch of small oddities to them. Furthermore, because we have no vision lines and due to the obfuscation of the sim it can often times be challenging to know why exactly a QB fails or succeeds.
But I think most everyone has come to a few agreeable points. Pocket and Pass Awareness is relatively mediocre, Pass Technique is king due to Thread the Needle (the one true SA of QB), and Morale is huge on QBs.
This build looks to maximize all of those points and create a highly effective QB while also being relatively cheap.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keypoints
Keypoints of this particular Archetype is a HIGH CONTRACT and the Scholar Trait <- Non-negotiable! Alongside 65 Heart and Gold Home Town Hero.
95+ Pass Technique and 75+ Pass Accuracy and Pass Consistency.
With 25+ Balance and Footwork.
We also want to keep our Salary as low as we can for cost/SP ratio since any salary adjusts we make are further amplified by our high contract.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Let's Talk
Normally we'd get right into the build break points at this time. But let's talk about why we make some of the specific choices we do with this build. In particular, those relating to 65 Heart, Gold Home Town Hero, Scholar, and a High Contract.
Firstly, let's talk Scholar. For a free Trait, Scholar is one of the best if not the best Trait you can choose if you are going to be making a full Vet run on a team - providing the player uses Technical as opposed to Physical skills. What's the difference? Generally Physical skills are those controlled by Conditioning/Energy, whilst Technicals are controlled by Heart/Morale. This likely isn't always true - but it's the best understanding we have of the sim at the moment.
Quarterbacks in particular are loaded with Technical skills and very few (1) Physical skill in Pass Power. Everything else? Consistency, Accuracy, Technique, Awareness, and etc are Technical skills. Why does this ultimately matter? Because these are the skills improved by Scholar. The more your QB sees the same plays, the better they get at beating those plays - we want to maximize that bonus.
So now let's talk High Contracts. What does a high contract do? Well, it may do other things - but we know for sure that it gives any player who has a high contract a free +25 to their Heart Statistic. This is a big deal for Quarterbacks for the same reason we like Scholar. Heart controls how quickly we gain or lose Morale - and Morale modifies most of our passing skills. We want to be high morale as often as possible.
So why Home Town Hero at Gold as opposed to something else? The answer - is Heart and Toughness. Toughness also helps with not losing morale when being pass rushed or Trash Talked and lowers morale lost when hit. It's nice to think we'll never get sacked, but likely at some point we will and Toughness will help there. Gold Home Town Hero gives us 20 Heart and Toughness alonside a respectable bit of Conditioning as well. It's a great choice on a QB who only "really" needs Thread the Needle to be an effective QB otherwise.
Finally, 65 Heart. Why, specifically 65? Well, we detailed the answer to this above. With the free 25 Heart from a High Contract and the 20 Heart granted by Home Town Hero when playing at Home we get 65+25+20 = 110 Heart (100 likely being the cap) when playing home games - and still a respectable 98 when playing away with Silver Road Warrior. This does the utmost we can to ensure our QB is always feeling himself and playing his best.
So, that out of the way - let's get to it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 5
Here's our QB at level 5.
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111087.png
We have a lot of skills we need to get to a "floor" of very quickly. Grip and Pocket Awareness are two big ones of these as the blitz in Rookie can be brutal and we want to try to mitigate that early on. 60+ Technique is mandatory and we need a smattering of Leadership if we intend to run the ball at all and some early investment into Heart and Toughness so we don't get catastrophically depressed from all our receivers who are going to be dropping passes all over the place.
Things get better for us pretty quickly though and by playoffs we could look like this:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111296.png
Also - a key point to make about QBs is they don't get nearly as punished as other positions for being out of Energy, don't sweat your Conditioning early on, keep getting better at Technical skills.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 10
Our goal at the level up is to start getting ready to support Gold Thread the Needle. Everything goes to Pass Technique here, so we end up like this:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111464.png
On the way to the playoffs we're going to be moving a lot of our secondary Statistics to their endpoint values. Pass Awareness, Balance, Heart, Toughness, etc. The important thing is to get every else set to just devote the rest of your career to becoming a better passer.
By playoffs, we look like this:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111689.png
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 15
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111848.png
Every chance we get to improve our Pass Technique, we take it. If you want to be impatient here and buy Cap Boosts, go ahead and just dump it all into Tech and get it to 95 ASAP. Otherwise, everytime we get a Cap Booster, its going into Tech first thing.
By this point our Receivers are probably getting faster and we need to get a bit more Conditioning and Pass Power behind our build. By Playoffs, we'd look like this:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111928.png
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 20
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654111991.png
By 20 we prepare to finish off our Leadership and finish Pass Power. We can take more Technique, so we do so.
All we have left to do by now is just to finish Leadership, get our Condition up and improve our Passing game. By the Playoffs, we look like this:
http://www.glb2scout.com/vpimages/330_NEW_1654112133.png
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Level 25
We take our last bit of Technique if we haven't already, finish our Conditioning fully and get our last bit of passing done. Silver Road Warrior finishes out the build.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I hope this write up shed some light on this particular Archetype and fosters some discussion around the build and how it can improve - and other ways to build throughout its career. Hoping this helps someone!
