Using GLB2Scout, I've gone through all of the 3WR TRIPS WR1 Clearout plays and universally, WR3 is running the wrong route. The break point on the field isn't the same as on the picture.

WR3 should be making his break along the BTE Go route. Instead, WR3 is crossing to the Center line before breaking upfield. This is happening on all the plays no matter the team or the WR. So it doesn't seem to be a failed check.

The problem is that this play is designed (by the picture) to exploit Cover 3 as WR3 and the TE are supposed to be running seam routes that cause a FS check. If the FS covers the TE, WR3 is open. If the FS covers WR3, the TE is open. Instead, WR3 is running into the middle of the FS zone while the TE is running his Go route. The TE break point is 15 yards downfield, creating a problem from 10yds to 15yds deep.

The WR3 break point needs to be changed. You can see from the lack of WR3 targets against Cover 3 Defenses that he's running the wrong route. The break point is at the right Vertical distance (10 yards) but it's at the wrong Horizontal spot.

It's possible that the WR1 break point is wrong too, but it could be a failed Route running check. Most of the WR1s are going 10yd deep, then slanting in 3 yards before breaking In at the 7yard line. This is causing WR1 to make 2 cuts - the first which is 135 degrees - instead of one 90 degree cut. Perhaps this is bugged too or it may be failed checks. I still have no idea what to think of this play as HF fires on WR1 against Zone Defense and it somehow overrides his route??? https://glb2.warriorgeneral.com/game/replay/818159/507207

Finally, it would be better if WR1 was running a 10 yd Hook/Curl instead of a 7yd In. The whole point of using TRIPS and having the HB go to the Weak side is to create 3 layers of pressure along the Weak side. Of course, you could just create another play that has those options too. Typically, against Zone the Offense is trying to put pressure on one Zone defender with 2 WRs attacking the edge of his Zone. This play should be creating 3 layers of attack - the Flat from the HB, the Hook/Curl from WR1 and the Flag from WR2. WR3 should be running a seam route as protection to the 3-layer attack. Instead, the play is causing a lot of HB dump-offs because the high-low attack on the Edge has too much distance - WR2 Flag route and the HB Flat are 20 yards apart. The more optimal high-low attack is WR3 high and WR1 low along the seam route, but with the WR3 break point in the wrong spot it isn't happening.

A revamped play or an additional play, in addition to the WR3 route fix (and possibly WR1?), would be best.

Thank you.
