Well since you asked...in a GLB forum(?)...I'll share my thoughts:

That song is 90% trash, just like 90% of "Dixieland".

Side note: my family roots are in "Dixieland". My grandparents moved to Arizona in the 1950's. I went back to Missouri every summer to visit family and travel various areas throughout the South growing up. There are beautiful areas there, but it was like going back in time and no one there knew it because...no one there had ever left. I still go back there regularly for work, and while some areas (mainly larger cities like Charlotte, NC) have modernized, the majority (mainly rural) have not. Florida and Texas really aren't part of "Dixieland" imo.

Side note #2: This is not to say there are not good, kind-hearted people in the South, it's just to say they as a whole have a serious lack of knowledge and education and cling to "old beliefs" (which they are taught are "values") like any "tribe" that hasn't yet opened their eyes to the world as a whole. No one moves away from "Dixieland" and then moves back. There's nothing wrong with wanting to be "rural" and hammer home "country" values to your kids, many of those values are great, it's just that inherently some of those "good old" values are racist. The same holds true throughout the world. This isn't to "dis" anyone on here from the South. Again, many great people there, but if you're an adult capable of using a computer and feel you can honestly say there aren't a larger % of racist uneducated people there than anywhere else in the US, you're just being a homer and lying to yourself.

Side note #3: This isn't to say other regions of the US don't have their own inherent "tribal" views. I mean, the US is almost as large as the entire continent of Europe. Of course there are going to be major differences between regions. It's just that the South's are the most back-asswards and uneducated compared to every other region of the US. But hey, just like your favorite football team, if you're from there, you proudly puff your chest and believe it's "best" and "right" because...well...because you're from there and you're parents told you it's the best because that's what their parents told them. Really no other reason why. See "religion" for same logic.

Side note #4: I live in Arizona and am actually pretty conservative (I tend to vote Libertarian, because fck both the other corrupt "teams"), so this isn't the view of a liberal, but that of a 45-year-old who has traveled the world. I dislike lazy, intentionally uneducated, self entitled people of all varieties equally.

Side note #5: Been watching football all day and I'm drunk. Send all complaints to Daedalus@glb.com.

On a more important/relevant note...Football is here boys!!!

You do understand that what you said is the very definition of racism right?

lol, I was drunk, and thought it would be fun to stir the pot. As Packer fans say, no offense.

...but observationism and racism are not the same thing.

Seriously though, back to the (why was this a) main topic, that song sucks, regardless of lyrics.

...but I did learn a new phrase..."Britbong"...lol hadn't heard that one before. Might try it out on my trip to England/Scotland/Ireland next June. I assume best reserved for an Irish pub?

You're talking about something you have no clue about. Just spouting derogatory stereotype. Your observation skills are lacking.

Agreed, most of what I said should be considered offensive to those from the South. It was inflammatory and uncalled for. It also wasn't directed at anyone in particular on this site, least of all you Bear. But as I re-read it, I'm not sure I find anything untrue about it. There were many references to "this doesn't apply to all from the South".

...but are you debating that the South has the least educated population of any region in the US? The current least educated states in the US are:

44. South Carolina
45. Kentucky
46. Alabama
47.Arkansas
48. Louisiana
49. West Virginia
50. Mississippi.

Congrats, West Virginia broke up the South's monopoly.

And this national study was reported everywhere, including Fox Business, so it's not just some left-wing coastal biased rag article: https://www.foxbusiness.com/lifestyle/most-least-educated-states-america-2020

So possibly it would be a good idea to mix in some math and science along with all the Dixie values and Jesus, though it is difficult as they often contradict each other.

We have a ton of problems here in Arizona as well. The diference is, just because I live here, doesn't make me such a homer that I can't still identify these issues. One of our issues is we call 'em like we see 'em and don't give a rats ass what others think. Blessing and a curse.

We can carry on as if this is a serious discussion, or put it to bed as drunken diatribe, I'm good either way.
