I didn't know this existed until 5 minutes ago. How do they they work, and who's got the lowest total (greater than 0, obviously) atm?

Me too, so I'm guessing 300 is the max. Who has fewer, and why?

Not much to tell, made the whole process of determining bans and warnings a lot easier. I think you got -50 or -100 depending on violation and over time the value would build back up iirc. If you fell below a certain threshold you couldn't talk in public forums until it rose above it again.

I was off the mod team by the time it was implemented I think, I got too busy to check the forums as often as I do now for a while so they needed more active people doing so.

What do you mean not much to tell? The great moderation wars of the earlier days are thrilling tales. It's got your religious zealots, freedom fighters, pearl clutchers, spies. It's got trials and appeals, lists of known offenders, secret deals.

There's really something for everyone. It's like a coming of age story, but it's middle aged adults coming into contact with internet culture before social media was as prevalent as it is today. It was a bloody battle, with nobody walking away unscathed.

Back in the days when permanently banned users had their private forums where they secretly plotted to overthrow the main boards. Shit was intense.

You'd know more than me, I just was there to initially pass along bug reports so long as it actually was a bug... and then to look after the raving lunatics in FFA for a while.

Long story short, is a lot of mods and admins that wanted to run the forum full of middle aged men like it was an elementary school, and a bunch of middle aged men that acted like they were in elementary school. All with a sprinkle of teenagers that weren't cool enough for 4chan.

So the site is loaded with a lot of moderation tools to make sure all bans are "fair and balanced" and reviewed by multiple layers of mods and admins, and systems in place to make sure bans aren't too long but also fall backs for repeat offenders and all kinds of nonsense. All a bunch of craziness to try to ameliorate the difference between mods and admins that wanted to rule with an iron fist of religious morals, and users that wanted to act like children interacting with the world for the first time.
