My case for masks was never about obedience. But you know that. And now it's a moot point anyway -- and thank goodness for that.
But to your broader point, ya gotta remember: when a person sets rules, they're trying to accomplish something. And there are times when slavishly enforcing or following a rule actually gets in the way of what the rule is meant to accomplish. There's an entire subreddit devoted to that concept called "Malicious Compliance," and there are some delicious examples there.
The forum rules are meant to promote and encourage fun and entertaining discussions in the GLB forums. In the Golden Age of GLB, so many people wanted to post in GLB Main that if anyone had been allowed to clutter up GLB Main with utter nonsense, it would have hindered people's ability to find and participate in fun and entertaining discussions, so the mods were strict on that rule.
Nowadays, activity on the site in general and in GLB Main in particular is quite a bit lower, and dead and inactive forums can drive people away from the game. In that environment, strict enforcement of the forum rules will reduce forum activity even further. So, it starts to make sense for the mods to be a bit more tolerant about what gets posted in GLB Main, in the name of keeping the forums active and in-turn keeping the game active. That doesn't mean EVERYTHING has to be allowed, but maybe it means allowing something like, say, the petry thread.
