Things get pretty boring at playoff time for teams that don't make the top 4.
Instead, have all teams play for their league's final standing, if not the cup:

Week 1:
1v4 (as normal)
2v3 (as normal)

5v8
6v7

9v12
10v11

Week 2: week 1 winners and losers play each other.

This way, after week two's winners and losers, everyone has a rank in the league from 1 to 12 which can be added to their Team page after every season.

But, most of all, everyone is playing games and getting excited for next season (instead of wallowing in misery while contemplating if they should even do another season). After all, season to season player retention is the goal, right?

Addendum: think about our phone apps. The successful ones are the ones that send push notifications to keep you engaged throughout the day, if not the week.

They know that once your attention moves elsewhere it's more difficult to get you back and excited about the app.

Well, that's what happens in GLB every season. 67% of teams, over the 12 days between their final game and first game of the new season, play only 3 ladder games.

With only 3 games in 12 days attention definitely moves elsewhere. That makes it even harder to keep players excited about the new season.

By adding a couple of playoff games it keeps everyone engaged longer and more likely to commit to another season.

^ This is a good idea. Even playing for eighth place is better than not playing at all.
