I'm in the Oncor electric delivery area (my wife actually works there) but obviously use whatever retail electric provider that has the best fixed rates (about 8 cents/ KWh in my current contract.
For those outside of Texas that have heard stories of people getting hit with $5k+ electric bills... that is true but those people made the decision on their own to enter into a variable rate contract that clearly states the price will fluctuate with market rates that are based on supply and demand. I'm sure none expected that large of a price jump, but they knew the rates could change up or down and they gambled (wrongly) that rates would drop.
I pay my utilities on month-tomonth usage and after reading horror stories out of Texas I'm now tempted to change.
