The Blica Bulletin – Issue 12 – “Black Bears beat on Blicas”
Written By Herouk87
St Michael – Being competitive seems to be getting harder and harder on a week to week basis within the Western Europe AA#3 zeta conference. St Michael, who have now lost three games on the bounce with a combined score of 22-118, find themselves on the brink of being out of playoff contention after easily being handled by the underrated Bergen Black Bears.
The game started well enough for the Blicas, with the first quarter seeing them control the ball and the clock as the first points of the game came from a 35 yard FG from Gazoo Gramatica. At this point there was an air of cautious optimism circulating round the “Blica Heads” in attendance. Could St Michael get their season back on track by defeating the much fancied Bergen squad?
Bergen’s response came on the first drive of the second quarter. After driving down the field in an orthodox manner behind star HB Lou Gehrig, Bergen took the lead on a play which was most certainly not in Mammux’s playbook. An attempted pitch to Gehrig resulted in a fumble caused by Achilles Veron after he beat Neo Stormstrike at the line of scrimmage. However it was Stormstrike who recovered the ball and started to make a beeline for the end zone. Just when it looked like he would stroll into the end zone another great defensive play, this time from H.K. Phooey knocked the ball to the turf once again. From out of nowhere it was Gehrig who swooped on the ball for the most bizarre TD of the season. To cap it all, the PAT was missed by Bergen kicker Mathis Pedersen to make the score 6-3 to the Black Bears.
The rest of the half was tightly contested with both teams swapping field goals and then interceptions. Eric MartinsQB who now has the unwanted title of leading the conference in interceptions was picked off by Jebediah Smith after heavy pressure form the defence. The Black Bears could not build on this though as three plays later Bill Brickwall clutched a badly thrown Gordon Blue pass to restore equilibrium. The score in Dark Forest Memorial at the half; 9-6 to the men from Norway, with it all to play for.
One of the characteristics of St Michael’s season so far is that they can hold any team in the first half, but as players begin to tire the game slowly goes out of reach. We saw it last week against. We’ve seen it against the Yorkshire Rippers and even last week against Antwerp. Today proved to be no different for the Blica’s as the third quarter once again proved to be pivotal in the game outcome. On the Blica’s first possession of the second half it was Jebediah Smith, who proved to be the thorn in St Michael’s side all day getting his second interception of the day and seventh of the season. Starting at the Blica 28 yard line Bergen put another steak into the heart of the Blica defence, Gehrig getting his second TD of the game on a short Blue pass.
With 4 minutes remaining in the third, Mathis Pedersen added another three points to Bergen’s tally after a fumble by Baller T on a punt return gifted the Black Bears with great field position. The Blicas just couldn’t seem to hang onto the ball as on their next drive Bary Sanders turned the ball over on the half way line following a hit from Reg Ina. It has been a season to forget for Sanders whose 6 fumbles tie for first place in the conference.
Mathis Pedersen added his third FG of the game at the beginning of the fourth quarter making the score 22-6 as the question of whether or not St Michael could mount a comeback was being asked in the press box. St Michael twice got into FG range thanks to MartinsQB hitting his targets but on both occasions they were thwarted on fourth down by the Black Bear defence. The real killer blow came after the Blica’s were stopped on downs for the second time. It took just one play for WILLY WANKER to ice the victory for Bergen as he took a pitch and turned the corner to go 74 yards for the TD. This was the straw that broke the camels back and the scoring was complete after Lou Gehrig got his third touchdown of the game before time expired. The final result from Dark Forest Memorial was a slightly flattering 36-6 win for Bergen.
The game ball is split between Lou Gehrig who was once again superb for Bergen and seems to be the key piece in their puzzle, especially when running outside the tackles and Jebediah Smith who finished with 5 tackles and two INT’s. St Michael may feel aggrieved at the score line but can have no arguments about the victors as they were outplayed today. The problem for the Blica’s at this moment in time seems to be that the offense is giving the ball away too often (39 giveaways in 12 games is not good enough at any level) and their defence is being stretched to breaking point as a result. We have seen that the St Michael defence is capable of holding teams, but not without some help from this one dimensional offense they have in place.
There seems to be no rest bite for St Michael either as they must now prepare for the Copenhagen Armadillos, who were unlucky to lose narrowly to Stirling this week. Thomas Rasmussen will be the key for Copenhagen as they look for a repeat of last year’s 27-7 victory over the men from St Michael.
