Route Running is made for Possession Receivers (and to some degree power receivers) but if you're Possession WR has pretty high speed and agility, is it better to go with creative moves to get free rather than route running style?

you are comparing apples to penguins

you can do both at the same time, or neither.

Route Running is a SA, that you can choose to invest in, and any amount of investment is beneficial.

Creative is a tactics setting, that anyone can turn on and off at will (creative vs exact). If an OT gets listed as a TE in the depth chart, he gets to choose what type of route he runs.

sorry I wasnt clear. I meant the TACTICS route running vs creative for a WR not the SA

Also this; If you want to use Creative Route Running tactic both the QB and the Receiver really need to have high vision. 60's won't cut it.
For the receiver; he has to see the whole field and anticipate the 'open spot' in either the zone or simply the coverage. Then he heads for that 'open area' where...

The Qb must also see the field and see the receiver change it's route... and see him get open... to anticipate this and make the throw.

Agility and speed will help but success with the Creative tactic is much more based off of Vision than anything else. Lack that and your receiver will simply not run the route right AND fail to get open as well. Also QB must be in synch (visually).

Exact vs Creative

The theory of Creative is great. In practice, not so much.

#1 Separation is what gets the target. If the dot jukes and wiggles and fakes, he really didn't get anywhere. You just need 1 fake to "stun" the defence, and then you need to get away to get targets.

#2 It requires amazingly huge amounts of Agility, and QC and RR SAs, because every little wiggle slows your dot down.

#3 like Theo said, the QB and WR need to be on the same page, so even if you can get your WR to do it, the QB needs to see you come open which might be outside of the usual progression.

In short, 95% of the time, avoid Creative. Try it on a high end rTE first (L60+), to see the best case scenario.

I use creative on a rec FB...And the FB route progressions are nearly always dedicated solely to him which seems to over-ride possible low vision....

I have tried this (the limited progressions approach) and have NOT had good success with it... yet. I've given up on it for now but am still working on it in the meantime, trying it when major games are not on the line.
