Is this just the equivalent to deflecting? Like if DE flats is called and the DE has a chance to deflect?

Yep, it also helps with batting balls.
I'm not sure if it's popular anymore, but some DTs forego pass rushing skills and invest in Deflect instead. Instead of sacking the QB they hope to bat the balls instead.

I did a test build back in the day. You still need some pass rush skill for deflect to be useful. Can't be pushed around and expect to batt a ball down.

So I did some research of the top current season HoFers and out of the top 5 DTs and DEs in the past 6 seasons there were a total of two pass deflections with the most recent pass deflection coming in season 39.
Are we sure these are even still in the game? Looks like some builds from way back were able to get around 10 PDs a season

I mean if they have 2 deflections i would assume they are still in the game

I guess what I'm asking is what has changed to the game to make them obsolete? 2 deflections across a sample size of 1500+ games seems funky when they existed before.

could also be nobody builds for it anymore?

Do CPU builds change? Because the same players who had like 7-8 PDs a season now get 0

Snap count would matter here, as well as perfect dice rolls. 7 or 8 out of 1k can easily be 0 the next season

Whatever the reason, I miss deflections from the D-line. When a DT of mine got one last season, I got so excited thinking that they were back. They aren't.

I tried to make some experimental deflect builds for pick up linemen. Didn't really work out.
