I've always thought this was dumb, a scramble tackle for loss is a sack. The only time it is not in real football is when the play is specifically a run play with the QB, drawn up that way. Why should trying to avoid a sack negate that sack from the tackler's stat?

Ive noticed lately also, that if you get to the qb before the play action fake handoff it does not count as a sack as well.

This one can make a bit of sense, at least in reality.
Real stat recorders don't have access to what a coach called, so if a play has the blockers run blocking, and looks like a handoff/pitch was imminent, the play would actually be recorded as a broken up run play instead of a play action as the stat keepers wouldn't have known.
That being said, in a game... prolly should still be a sack.
