Is there a general consensus on what the best/most effective roster construction is?

What are some crazy things that have been tried? What's worked and what hasn't?

1 TE
1 S* Speedy WR
1 S* Slot WR
1 Possession WR
1 Speedy WR

3 Run Stop DTs
2 Run Stop DE
2 Pass Rush DE
2 Blitzing LB

1 QB
1 HB (S*)
1 Blocking FB

I used to run 1 C, 2 G, 2 T, but with cap changes its better to go with default

2 C
3 G (1 S*)
3 T

1 S* TE
1 TE
3 or 4 WR (1 S*)

3 DTs (1 S*)
2 DEs (1 or 2 S*)
4 LBs
-1 S*
-1 cover (i prefer S*)
-0 of 1 blitzers

4 CBs (1 or 2 S*)
1 FS (S*)
1 SS (S*)

I believe that having 2 S* LBs and 1-2 S* CBs along with a S* SS provides any defense with a leg up. A S* DT is not necessary but is nice. I would say a S* DE has a little more value than S* DT. Offensive S* positioning really depends on what you want to do offensively. If you are going to pass at all a S* TE and a S* WR can provide a nice lift. Any running obviously should involve a S* HB.

Overall depth that I currently like what update be:

1 QB
1-2 HB
1 FB
2 C
3-4 G
3 OT
2 TE
3 WR (might need more depending on use of 3/4/5 WR packages. Can get away with 3 if they have enough conditioning though)

2 DT
3 DE
4-5 LB
4 CB
1-2 FS (if you have a backup FS you can make him a utility type and use him as backup to SS and CB as well as FS)
1 SS (if you opt for a second SS with only 4 LBs, you can slide the backup down to LB positions for better pass coverage typically)

I agree with Detroit here (and in most cases). Though I try to have only one S*HB with 95+ chem and then a Power FB specialize in PR/KR (usually 1-3rd ST MVPs each season, so the limits of FB aren't much of a factor, while the cap savings are beneficial and worth it. See Mystery Men for my latest example.

The craziest thing I ever did was to run a team that didn't have a HB. 2 FBs (bFB and rFB), but I didn't run FB plays like Xars does with GT. Instead I lined up the rFB as a HB and took the OOP penalty. I think that rFB got #2 MVP once, but it was kinda baked. I switched in a HB (Dung Attack) half way through and ran a heavy HB screen game. That was fun too. That team also had a 99% Zone D before changes made Zone/INTs easier. The team got to top 5 ladder and a few playoff appearances, though never took home to top hardware. Fun though. Otherwise I have run pretty much just white bread.

as far as effective goes though you are gonna want at least one superstar between your hb/wr/te for maximum success.

There is the time proven standard stuff that works. A lot of the very best teams I have seen are ones that went off the beaten path and have tried something different. Defenses are optimized to counter the standard offenses and struggle to match-up against the more unique ones.

Lots of S*s doesn't hurt.
