DE is kind of an antiquated position these days tbh.

A "DE" can be put at 4-3 DE or 3-4 DE and those are vastly different positions

I'd recommend removing the "DE" position label entirely and replacing it with 2 new position labels.

The "DI" (defensive interior) position gets no OOP penalty as long as he's playing either head-up on an OT or between the OTs and on the line of scrimmage. That could be as a DT in a 4 or 5 man front, or a DE in a 3 man front.

The "ER" (edge rusher) position gets no OOP penalty as he's playing outside the OT and on the line of scrimmage. That could be as a DE in a 4 or 5 man front, or an OLB in a 3 man front.

this would help some flexibility with defensive playcalling as well as making players who are using these position labels get more appropriately used in pickup games.

Why over complicate things? It's pretty simple as is.

I explained in my OP, what wasn't clear?

I love it. It sucks not being able to stand up DEs in a 3-4. Or move a DT to DE in a 3-4.

DE's and DT's are different flex prices with different salary cap hits. LB's are even more expensive. They aren't going to rework the flex per position so you can game the salary cap with cheaper players.

so make the ER position 100 flex and the DI position 50 flex. It really doesn't need to be complicated at all.

It isn't complicated as it is. And ya that actually would change everything.

Not at most levels of football. Just the NFL an a limited numbers of College teams. Defensive end is not just an "Edge Rusher" in a 4-3. He still has a job to do in the run game as well like outside contain. Squeezing down on pulling guards to not allow them to kick him out in Power plays. Just as a OLB in a 3-4 in not just an "Edge Rusher," as he will be required to play in coverage on top of what the typical DE has to do but he has help from the 3-4 DE. Also, Body types for the 2 positions are usually much different going from a 4-3 DE to 3-4 OLB.

dude you're missing the point entirely. If you don't like "edge rusher" then how about "Edge Defender", or "ED" instead. The point is that a 4-3 DE and a 3-4 OLB have much more similar responsibilities than a 4-3 DE and a 3-4 DE, or a 3-4 OLB and a 4-3 OLB. Completely different positions, yet in this game they're built as the same position at the position select screen.

Does anyone know what the OOP penalty is? I actually switch positions all the time and have noticed no real effect. I've had run DEs who play DT. Put LBs at DE, SS at LB, CB at FS, and they seem to do well.

As for the thread topic, I get where you're coming from, but like others said its way too complicated because of flex issues. Perhaps the OOP penalties can be adjusted, and more position interchangeability could be enabled.

Defensive End is the name of the position in real life...
Defensive End has been the name since the game got more competitive
Why change it?

But you cannot move players around in different formations/play situations so it limits the defensive game plans.

You aren't locked in to using the same olb or DE in both formations. The only thing your idea actually proposes is making the salary cap more flexible for more superstars.
