DE is kind of an antiquated position these days tbh.
A "DE" can be put at 4-3 DE or 3-4 DE and those are vastly different positions
I'd recommend removing the "DE" position label entirely and replacing it with 2 new position labels.
The "DI" (defensive interior) position gets no OOP penalty as long as he's playing either head-up on an OT or between the OTs and on the line of scrimmage. That could be as a DT in a 4 or 5 man front, or a DE in a 3 man front.
The "ER" (edge rusher) position gets no OOP penalty as he's playing outside the OT and on the line of scrimmage. That could be as a DE in a 4 or 5 man front, or an OLB in a 3 man front.
this would help some flexibility with defensive playcalling as well as making players who are using these position labels get more appropriately used in pickup games.
