Hunting is only legal between dawn/dusk with slight exceptions, where I hunt it is specified time (1/2 hr) before sunrise and up until specified time past sunset . Hunting at night is therefore illegal although many hunters will travel to/from an area during the dark.
Don't hunt with dogs, mostly hunt with others but I really enjoy hunting alone but since I am the best caller most always there are others hunting with me.
It is a solemn feeling when you are out at night and it is black, very black on a cloudy night. if you dont have light and aren't on a good path seems like your boots find every twig and root to stumble on. And when you hear something rustling every hair stands up on your neck. I personally dont like putting myself in the hunt late, especially in far back situations. Too much can go south. I prefer the other end leaving very early and being where I want to start hunting just prior to dawn so i can have a chance to listen a bit while quiet. Then if things dont go my way or I trip/hear something very close to me, it will be light very soon and becomes a non issue. Generally I allow plenty time to return to camp but hey you if you get hurt and can't make it back....bear and wolves gotta eat also right?
My father guided so had many griz encounters. Myself only one close with a sow black, and many not so close. While on a trail walking slowly hear some movement behind a small bush. So instant stealth mode creeping closer and about 10 feet and ready to start to work around the side of the bush a small black cub scoots out the other side and meanders away up the bank, he wasn't running away from my being there....as I watch him I hear a bit of a huff and the bush moves a bit more. my brain says Oh there's prolly the Sow as i am creeping away walking backwards facing the bear's location and also taking the safety off ready to fire. Other that that one, other bears rarely closer than 50 yards. Year before last was stalked by a big male wolf. He had a chance to retreat but when he dropped his shoulders close to the ground and started to work closer to me at about 40 yds I dropped him in his tracks. Too many wolves way too many wolves

One time we were packing meat and my pack broke so I waited there sitting on a log beside a quarter of Elk. hehe funny thoughts go through your head as you sit beside all that meat with it's fresh kill smell wafting through the air. Looking around realizing I dont have a rifle...hehe decided i would wait for my buddy just over 50 yds from the quarter.
